Show Miscellany Ambition. By LAURA KINGSTON. 1 am suro that everyone whoso eye catches these words cherishes, warm in tho inner heart, some tiuo dreams, some high nmbition, somo vision of noble conduct which, if put into practice, would transform life, would bring the whirring angels' wings into tho affairs af-fairs of earth. To one man to many mon tho succoring suc-coring of ther poor and the sorrowful would be their choson mission. Tn the atroug arms of self-sacrifice and strenuous strenu-ous endeavor they would feel themselves them-selves lifted toward their chosen heaven. With others, tho scoking of Truth, iu all her shining garments, is the secret impulse of a lifetime. In many of us the ambition is a more personal one some deDnite step to be taken when the future comes down into present, somo delight to be achioved in tho coming days. But apart from these extraneous ideals there is hardl, T suppose, a man or woman drawing breath who does not cherish Bome. secret ideal of conduct, con-duct, somo tiny plant which it hopes will one day burst 'forth iffto glorious blossoming, to tho transforming of the mind which has harbored it. Then, in the dajB when exquisite flowers are starring the plant which has been so warmly sheltered, then will your lifo tako to itself a new and gracious outlino, then will holy impulses im-pulses urge you on to yet higher achievement, and you will find the ideal within your eager grasp, the willing capture of your long chase. Is this how you reason, you men and women who look to tho future for all the golden fruit which is to crown your lifo) I tell 3ou, then, that never a mortal being grasped in tho future reward or ideal or achiovemont which had uot been worked for iu the mist-hung mist-hung past which was onco tho living present. Ambition is a fino thing, and whon it is tho ambition for self-improvement it is tho quality which may well to-generate to-generate tho world. In this'world vou brought the clean sheet of your lifo, scored, maybe, with broad tendencies, with inherited likes and dislikes, but every ono of theso tondouoies it is within your power to eradicato or modify. Out of this world you can only tako your cultivated personality, tho sheet of 'your lifo, with tho pictures pic-tures and diagrams which you j-oursolf havo traced there or have allowod to be traced there. And.I greatly fear that if yon are depondine on your droam ambitions to do the delving and digging, tho designing de-signing and construction, which go to tho making o a satisfactory lifo edifice, edi-fice, tho final result will bo disappointment disap-pointment and chagrin for you. The finest nmbition must" have some correlating spring of action or it will, ot dire necessity, fall dead to tho ground. Inspiration, tho initial impulse, desire de-sire for perfection all thcao may come from the socrot ambition, tho shv ideal which you have so assiduouslv cherished through tho years; but corn-plot corn-plot ion. the perfection of a realized ideal, can only como whon achievement achieve-ment setR to work and brings into the region of your everyday life the thing which had previously shone, aloof and star-like, in tho heaven of 3our dreams, . The ultimate test of a man's life is tho chnrnctor which ho suoceods in shaping for himself, and onlv definite, considered action can mark liis character charac-ter for good. 1 do not ask you to put aside vour tp!
