The -parks of Una city are soon to be. supplied Avith a number num-ber of tho famous redwood, or "lily trees" of California, if the local park authorities decide lo accept an offer which has been made by the forestry officials of tho Fourth district. Preparations are now bein? made by the district officials to dlstributu between 100 and 200 trees of nursery stock from the Pocatello nur-sory nur-sory of tho Fourth district anionc the city park boards of Salt Lake. Bolso and Osdcn. While tho offer has not been officially accepted by the local authorities. authori-ties. B. Van dcr Schult, superintendent of the Osden parks, said today that a supply of tho trees probably would be planted in thlB city. Several years ago .h0 forester of the Fifth district with headquartors a I San Francisco, sent several "pounds of redwood red-wood seed to the nursery at Pocatello for experimental purposes. Tho sprouts are now eighteen Inches hlprh. and the supply Is sufficient to provide every range station, of tho Fourth district with several trees for further experimental experi-mental growth and with .more than 100 to spare, it was decided to offer these lo the park boards of the three cities. The supply is so limited that in no case will tho forestry officials try to sirpply Individuals. From the climatic conditions of the in-lermountaln in-lermountaln country and the growth shown by the seedlings, It Is believed thai the redwoods can be very successfully success-fully grown In Utah and Idaho. While the trees grow lo mammoth proportions In Californlu. the forestry officials do not. bellevo that the dry conditions here would permit of such a growth in this section. According to Superintendent Van dcr Schult. the redwoods arc beautiful ornamental trees, and could bo used to advantage in. any of Ogdon's several parks. |
