Show Sportstoculor Cougars no use bye no polish up a bln Pag 6 September 20, 1979 The football schedule lists it as a bye" but its not to be confused as a day off or vacation. True, the Cougars will not have a game this weekend. However, theres no change in the practice schedule. It will be work, as usual, for the players, while the coaches concentrate on scouting and recruiting this weekend. I know the break in the schedule may have a lot of people thinking BYU will be inactive, says Coach La Veil Edwards. On the contrary, were going to use the time to become more consistent with what were trying to do on the football field. Essentially, the Cougars will use the bye to sharpen up their game, allow the injured some time to heal and perhaps do whatever adjusting is necessary. This means a full practice k schedule for the period before BYU faces Texas-E- l Paso in a homecoming game at Provo. Each member of the Cougar coaching staff has isolated some phase of the game that deserves some attention. two-wee- Defensive coordinator Fred Whittingham foresees work against the option play, since the Cougars can expect to see a lot of that in the near future. Well need lots of. work before we become great. Assistant head coach Dave Kragthorpe is showing concern over the number of penalties charged against the Cougars in last Saturdays game with Weber State. In all, the Mountain Cats were penalized a record 219 yards in the 3 win over the Wildcats, a school record. Part of the problem, Kragthorpe feels, was the teams overly aggressive 48-- play. Our offensive line is in pretty good physical condition, although Scott Neilson has had some back trouble, and Ray Linford is just now getting back to where he was before his appendectomy, said Kragthorpe. Defensive line coach Tom Ramage, meanwhile, is looking forward to the return of defensive end Mat Mendenhall, one of two victims of a ruptured C appendix. Mat was back at practice on Monday, said Ramage, but we will have to bring him along slowly. He may be ready to play against Texas-E- l Paso. Mark Brady (who intercepted two passes against Weber) played well last Saturday, as did all our players. Thats very encouraging. Offensively, the Courgars can use the time to get quarterback Marc Wilson back to his former physical condition. Outside of a temporary loss of memory, he didnt suffer any injury in the game With Weber. But the real Marc Wilson isnt there yet. He still needs to regain his weight and his strength. Here Kyle Whittingham (33), Rob Wilson (17), Bill Schoepflin (43), and Walker (94) look on to Weber improvement in receiving assignments. We made too many mental mistakes against Weber, and dropped too many passes, was Chows assessment. And our only injury was a pulled muscle by tight end Clay Brown. Coach Chow said he may move Matt Braga, who caught two touchdown passes in the second half last Saturday, to flanker behind starter Bill Davis. But since the receivers must know both the split end and flanker positions, they are essentially interchangeable. In a major lineup change this week, the Cougars moved follback Mike Lacey back to linebacker. The move was precipitated by the performance of transfer back Eric Lane, who performed very well against Weber Saturday. Lane, who had been running at tailback, had 59 yards mi five carries, and caught seven passes for 95 more in the new position. Garth Hall, coach of the run- -' ning backs, is encouraged with the overall performance of his ball carriers, expressing great confidence in them. Eric (Lane) played a super game for us, and gave us some real punch," said Hall in his evaluation. Homer Jones also had a good game, and he remains our most consistent runner to date. And it really helps to have Scott Reber back in uniform and (Reber is recovering playing. from a shoulder operation, but had 49 yards on four carries, plus one pass reception.) One member of BYUs staff who wont benefit much from the teams schedule bye is assistant Mel Olson. Mel oversees the junior varsity team, and the Cougar jayvees will meet Nevada-La- s Vegas afternoon in the Thursday BYU Stadium. Olson, who also works with the varsitys offensive line, saw the jayvees post a 544) win over Ricks College last week. Thursdays 1 p.m. kickoff in the Stadium will be the first of three home games for the jayvees. A BIT OF DAYDREAMING In terms of work, a bye on the schedule doesnt mean much to college football coaches. It just means that they will be either scouting or recruiting in place of coaching on that particular Saturday. But football coaches arent above daydreaming on an Indian mtmmwr day. Asked what they would like to be doing next Saturday, if not submerged in football, they fantasied the following: Id probably be playing golf (LaVell Edwards)....Fishing or gathering wood for the fire place (Tom Ramage)....Youd at me find skiing Lake Powell (Fred probably be watching a football game, since that seems like all Ive ever done (Dick Felt)....I prefer golfing (Mel OIson)....Never had a chance to think, about it, but Id like to be in the mountains on the horseback, watching colors (Garth change Hall) ....Lugging golf clubs around Riverside(Dave Kragthorpe).. ..Tennis would be choice my (Doug Scovil). .,.Me? Just being home with the kids would be great (Norm Chow). BYUS NEXT GAME: Sep-- , tember 29 (Sat) Texas El Paso at Provo (1:30 p.m.) (Homecoming). |
