Sportsfoculor September coach, here's a question for ya IKley By Bliss Fullmer Last week I conducted a survey of coaches in the Roy Division of the W.F.F.L. .1 included in my survey, every little league football coach in Roy, plus several assistants. All together I surveyed sixteen coaches with twenty-tw- o selected questions, ami invited them to make recommendations which improve football in the league. Heres h' the coaches responded to my survey: I. Is your son on the team you coach? 13 said yes, 3 said no. ' 2. As coach of your own son, do you treat him like any other player? 11 said Yes, 2 said No. 3. Do you jive him special treatment?.. 0 said Yes 13 said No. Do you lean on him heavier than on other 4. players? . 5 said Yes 8 said No. 5. Should both teams be stationed on the same side of the field and the crowd on the opposite side? 13 said No. 3 said Yes, Nearly half of the coaches conceded that there was a crowd problem, but very few of them wanted to separate the teams from the parents and fans. 2 said No. 14 said Yes but two coaches favored separating boys according to their ability, but the majority believed that it is not being done that way in Roy. Seven of the nine who would approve of post season play for B and C teams were now coaching B or C teams, all but two of the A" coaches were against it. I am against bowl action for other than the A teams. The vast majority of Roy Coaches believe, as I do, that we should give the boys one more year in the 90 pound division. This plan was initiated at the start of the 1979 season, and then scrubbed, when so many coaches complained. I think it is still on the agenda for incoming eight year olds. 22. Most of the coaches wanted to set a date and be strict, but what are you going to do about the kid who has been on vacation, or who never knew the deadline, etc, etc,, too; etc.? These first five questions resulted from whispering in the grand stands about the coach who favors his own kid. I strived to find out how they felt about themselves, and about others in their profession. Have one week of conditioning, and then two weeks in pads, not the other way around. 7. Every Community should abide by the same rules, in relation to team selection, and strictly enforce the rules. 8. Fire any official who has three or more complaints against him. 9. Kids should play by weight only - age should have nothing to do with it. 10. A boy should have the advantage of a variety of coaches - not just one through his whole little league program. 11. Coaches should be able to have questionable players weighed before each game. 12. Need to improve officiating. 13. Be more selective of coaches - Screen coaches and have them pass a test. 14. Coaches should be taught better sportsmanship, and taught that this league is for boys. 9. Would you be in favor of allowing the 75 C team coach to go onto the field during time outs? 9 said Yes, 7 said NO. This was may own idea of something to help WFFL football, and I wanted to find qpt the thinking of the coaches. Those little guys are confused and frustrated; especially in the early games of the schedule. If the coach were allowed to trot onto the field and spend 30 seconds, maybe twice in each contest, it would improve the game, and help the boys better understand what they are out there for. 18.
