Show 78 Northern Utah Answers Hill Field 1989 Air Force Base is Utah's largest employer Utah’s skies are filled with the sounds of the daily as they fly 6 Fighting Falcons and other aircraft This is the most visible aspect of one of northern Utah’s largest residents Hill AFB However there is much more to the base than meets the eye of the casual observer Hill is the largest employer in the state of Utah with more than 20000 civilian and military personnel and an annual payroll of more than $586 million The major organization at the base is the Ogden Air Logistics Center which has more than 5000 military and civilian personnel It is one of five such centers assigned to the Air n Force Logistics Command headquartered at AFB Ohio Northern F-1- 1 Wright-Patter-so- The center has world-wid- e logistics management and maintenance support responsibilities for some of the Air Force’s most sophisticated weapon systems They include the Minuteman and Peacekeeper missiles the Emergency Rocket Communication System and the proposed Small Mobile Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System Program management for two of the Air Force’s fighter aircraft is performed at this center Nearly 300 4 Phantom and 6 Fighting Falcon jet aircraft annually receive depot maintenance modification and repair on the base Recently the center took on additional work loads for the OV-I1988 began work on the Bronco and as of Oct Hercules transport plane Ogden ALC is also the logistics manager for all conventional air munitions solid propellants explosive devices landing gear and training devices used throughout the Air F-- F-1- O 1 C-1- Force Bryce Griffin an electronics engineer in the Ogden ALC’s Directorate of Maintenance software division inserts a circuit board into an interface test adapter 5 for testing on the automatic test The test station provides maintenance and repair of operational ground support equipment for the Minuteman missile HP-E3- PhotoRalph C Jensen An important facet of the Hill AFB mission is support of tenant units apart from the ALC These units include the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing first Air Force unit to fly the 6 the 419th TFW first Reserve unit to fly the 6 84th Radar Evaluation Squadron which tests manual and computerized ground radar systems and the 6545th Test Group which tests unmanned vehicles and operates cruise missile recovery systems for the Air Force F-1- F-1- The base manages more than 961000 acres of land with a majority of that amount representing the Utah Test and Training Range and 6698 acres representing the base proper The estimated value of real estate equipment and inventory managed is $86 billion Hill has a large impact on Utah’s economy with expenditures for salaries contracts construction retirement pay tue ition aid to schools health insurance payments and accommodations for travelers off-bas- In fiscal 1987 the base awarded $18 billion in contracts with more than $130 million going to Utah firms |
