Show 40 Northern Utah Answers Recreation 1989 Recreation from 38 campgrounds in the vicinity It is a must for the person who enjoys the outdoors in large doses The Forest Service is located at 324 25th St Og2 den Another source for hiking information is the Sierra Club Their booklet of area hiking trails includes maps distance of trails difficulty elevation and oth9 for more informaer interesting facts Call tion 625-518- 393-626- Fishing Fishing is a major pastime for a lot of outdoor-minde- d people This is especially true for residents of Weber Box Elder Morgan and Davis counties who are blessed with some of the best and most popular fishing waters in the state Most are located within easy driving distances of the state’s largest metropolitan areas so these waters get some of the heaviest fishing pressures of any in Utah says Tom Pettengill fisheries manager northern region Utah Division of Wildlife Resources In fact calculating there are about 400000 fishing license holders in the state Pettengill says it’s not too farfetched to say some 300000 of these anglers fish waters of the four counties sometime during the year And fishing opportunities in the area are varied Anglers are not only able to go after a wide range of game fish but they have the chance of fishing for them in about any manner they choose From tossing dry flies for trout to putting out set lines for lun-kchannel catfish the variety is almost endless Game fish are found in such Weber County waters as Pineview Reservoir Ogden River Weber River South Fork North Fork Middle Fork Little Beaver Causey Creek Reservoir Wheeler Creek Wolf Creek Spring Creek and the 21st St Pond a small water that gained notoriety a few years back when an angler caught a piranha someone had released from an aquarium Box Elder County has one of the largest and most popular angling waters in the form of Willard Bay Reservoir The warm water fishery offers a chance for anglers to take walleye bass channel catfish crappie and even trout There is Bear River with its lunker channel catfish bass crappie and trout Locomotive Springs Honeyville Ponds Box Elder Creek and streams in the Raft River Mountains to the west such as George Johnson and Clear creeks that all hold vari er ous species of trout In addition the reservoir at Mantua offers fishing for bass bluegill and an occasional trout Trout and whitefish angling take the spotlight in Morgan County where waters of the Weber River and its tributaries run cold or cool most of the year Stoddard Slough and various tributaries to the Weber River such as Lost Creek also produce some fine fishing for trout There’s also popular East Canyon Reservoir with its various species of trout and kokanee salmon Lost Creek Reservoir has proven its worth as a fishery year after year for boat or bank anglers after cutthroat and rainbow trout Some of the region’s good fishing is even located right smack in the middle of its heaviest residential area Good fishing is found in waters of Davis County such as Holmes Creek Reservoir and Kaysville Ponds with their bass and bluegill Farmington Pond offers trout fishing and sees heavy pressure while more hardy anglers can tackle Farmington Creek and other small streams along the Wasatch Front that have populations of small but scrappy cutthroat trout Although success is not always certain for anglers area the opfishing in the waters of the portunities are there four-coun- ty Hunting Hunting has been a prime outdoor activity in Utah throughout recorded history In fact right now the state offers opportunities to hunt as wide a variety of game birds and animals as just about anywhere else in the world True some of its hunting is not on a par with that available in other areas but it’s still nothing to be sneezed at There are an estimated 500000 sportsmen in Utah and a good share stalk mountains and fields of the state each year in search of various game They generate a good part of the $600 million spent by sportsmen annually When it comes to big game animals Utah has consistently ranked as one of the better places to hunt the much desired mule deer whose populations have recovered nicely after several harsh winters The state also boasts a fine population of elk whose numbers have climbed from about 6000 in 1967 to almost 40000 today Special hunts for moose antelope bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goat are also available Recreation continued to 42 |
