Show IHC Is Directed “In the final analysis the trustees are ultimately responsible to the community for the proper fulfillment of IHC’s mission” says William N Jones board chairman In 1975 when the LDS Church divested itself of its hospitals church leaders asked a group of responsible community citizens to assume governance This group holds the assets of IHC in trust for the community and its members receive no payment for their trustee by Volunteers of senior IHC management” says Jones “We have also recruited trustees from outside the Intermountain region to bring special health care policy and management expertise to the board And five of our trustees are practicing physicians” Meetings Used As Control Mechanisms: “When you combine the regular meetings for the full board with its committees and subcommittees we meet at least 34 times a year to review actions make decisions and give direction to management” he says service ' “Today our board is composed of 19 community members and two members The central board deals with issues that impact all of our hospitals A recent example of this is the handling of AIDS cases in hospitals The five most senior managers at IHC make up the management committee This group is directly respon- “There are many approaches to AIDS treatment and we didn’t want a different policy at each hospital” says Thales H Smith MD pediatrician and chairman of the board’s professional standards committee “So our committee directed IHC’s medical affairs division to set up a task force of physicians administrators and other clinicians and propose a policy that would work at each hospital” Committee members spent hours reviewing the task force’s recommendations- sible for our activities and reports to the board day-to-da- y Community Trustees an excellent policy” he says “We want to do a compassionate and effective job of treating AIDS patients in all of our hospitals” says Smith W'e have procedures for caring for them and protecting their confidentiality and we have guidelines that will protect employees and physicians from becoming infected We require a patient’s consent before testing for the AIDS antibody Over 250 Citizens Direct IHC: “Between our central board of trustees and the trustees who form the community hospital boards for each of our hospitals there are more than 250 people representing the communities in the governance and control of IHC” says Jones “None of us receives payment for the work we do as trustees but we are deeply committed to doing our best If anyone sees something either good or bad at one of our hospitals we hope you will share your thoughts with the local board of trustees And if you have concerns with our efforts as a system please share them with a member of our central board” he
