Show PASSES MEASURE DESPITE VETO City Council Allows Bill uf Skidmore. For th9 First Tim Mayor Is Overridden by City Fathers. It ' Is Decidod to Accept .Forty ' Free Tclophones in Lieu of Liconso, FOR the first time in the history of the present administration a veto by Mayor Morris was overridden by the City Council last night. Tho necessary ten votes to pass over tho Mayor's head were secured to the O. H. Skidmore bill against the city for ?150. which on two previous occasions had been passed by the Council and disapproved disap-proved by Mayor Morris. The action of the Council, notwithstanding the veto of the Mayor was sustained by a vote of 10 to 2. The bill of Mr. Skidmore Skid-more Is for services rendered as an electrical engineer In testing the voltage vol-tage of tho wires and meters of the Utah Light and Railway company. Vote for Frco Telephones. Upon the favorable report of the Finance committee tho city fathers by unanimous vote decided to enter into tho contract with the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone company whereby the f!tv ?a tn rprilvi l'nrtv freo telonhoneS In lieu of license fees from the company. com-pany. The contract also includes that the city be furnished private fire alarm wires free and Is for two years from May 1. 1901. The City Attorney rendered ren-dered an opinion on the legality of the agreement in which he held that the contract would be legal. For the purpose of developing the underground un-derground water flow of Emigration canyon $2500 was appropriated, the money to be expended under direction of the City Engineer. The ordinance levying the assessment on the nbuttlng property along East South Temple street from State to Tenth East for the paving of that thoroughfare thor-oughfare was referred to the Streets committee. Would Add Fifth Story. A petition from B. G. Raybould, as agent for David F. Walker, asking permission per-mission to add a fifth story to the D. F. Walker building, was referred to the Fire and Engineering committees, with the City Engineer and Building Inspector In-spector associated. The Recorder was instructed to notify the petitioner to be present Wednesday evening, when the matter will be taken up. Building Inspector In-spector F. W. Lewis has refused permission per-mission to erect the additional story on the ground that tho present walls of tho building are too light, under section 73 of the revised ordinances. A petition from the residents on Third West street stating that the spur tracks of the Salt Lake & Ogden Railway Rail-way company are a nuisance and asking ask-ing that the city order the company to remove them, was referred to the Streets committee, with the City Attorney At-torney associated. |
