BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL - It will be a 'dream come true" for about 25 students and their University of Utah instructor who will tour Eastern Europe countries, taking pictures of virtually everything they see. The students six of them from south Davis County are enrolled in a U of U extension course, "Utah out of Context," being taught in the basement of Stoker Elementary School. The students, along with professional profes-sional photographer-instructor Al Thelin, will tour East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, iyc:-y.Ai.:,A !-'V'-Jv.--A,t;,.,.,.A.f.. "It will be an excellent opportunity oppor-tunity for the students to meet their counterparts in these foreign countries, coun-tries, which until recently were off-limits off-limits to most American tourists," r said Thelin. ' We will exchange our cultural ideas and show them many of the photographs that we have taken during the past several weeks." Students have been traveling to all parts of Utah during the past several weeks where they have photographed "people out of context" con-text" Thelin said all of the assignments dealt with people "doing their own thing." i "The photos all taken with ! 3200 Kodak ASA film - depict Utahns at work and play, and the grandeur of our state," said Thelin. "We are inviting our friends of Europe to exchange these same types of photographs, and other kinds of artwork, that they have created. ' ' He explained that the students will visit universities that have art departments and eat and sleep in university dormitories. Even with the cutback of expenses, cost of the trip will be in excess of $2,000 per student. "This is not a sightseeing trip, but rather an adventure in discovery. We want to exchange ideas with these Eastern European student artists and hopefully set up an exchange program with them to come to Utah," he said. He emphasized that for years artists ar-tists have not been allowed to talk to foreign visitors. "But this trip is designed to provide opportunities many students, especially those living liv-ing in Romania, will have to vent their emotions to Americans personally per-sonally and to relate their dreams and ambitions. "We hope to do what others only dream of doing, said Thelin.
