Show Vilces rally to win in final minutes By TOM HARALDSEN VIEWMONT HIGH-- Viewmonfs Lady Vikes went on a 9-0 run in the final five minutes and held on to edge Bonneville 48-47 in Region One girls' basketball Friday : afternoon. The win left Viewmont : tied with the Lakers atop the league : standings, both with 5-1 records as the First half of league play ended. The win was an important one for : Viewmont, now 11-2 on the year, and for new head coach Ron J oh an sen, who took over the reins : last week after coach Vi Hillman resigned. : "We really needed this one," a relieved Johansen said after the game. It was a topsy-turvy affair in which both teams took large leads, : only to see them disappear. Viewmont led 15-10 after one period and built that lead to 27-19 at : halftime, but the Lakers fought back midway through the third period to - tie the game at 33-all. Bonneville went to guard Heather Cam g an, - who helped the Lakers to a 40-37 advantage entering the final quarter. And as the Vikes went cold, Bonneville increased its lead. Car-: Car-: rigan scored twice more, making it : 44-37 with 5:26 left At that point. Jenny Siddoway canned a long three-point hoop that seemed to fire up her teammates. Melissa Eggett stole a pass, and drove the lane for a layin to make it 44-42. Siddoway scored again to tie the game at 44-all with 4:15 to go, and then, after Jennifer Jones blocked a shot, Jennifer Jeppesen took a great pass from Siddoway and scored to make it 46-44 with 3:51 left. Bonneville's Susy Hassell made a free throw with 3:29 left to make it 46-45, but Jeppesen scored again at the 3:10 mark, and Chrissy Far-rell's Far-rell's basket with 3:04 to go ended the scoring at 48-47. Both teams missed chances in the final minute, as Hassell missed a pair of free throws with eight seconds left, and Heather Lemmon rebounded the second miss to ice the victory. Viewmont also missed a last second free throw, but Siddoway Sid-doway intercepted the outlet pass to stop a Bonneville threat. Siddoway led Viewmont with 16 points, Kim Blackham and Eggett added eight each, and Jeppesen and Jones added six apiece. Jones suffered suf-fered a stress fracture in the game and will probably be out at least two weeks. Viewmont will play at Layton Wednesday and at Davis on Friday. WEBER 75 VIEWMONT 64 On Tuesday at Weber, the Warriors War-riors shot 70 percent the first half, building up a huge lead and then holding off the Vikes for the win. Weber is 4-2 in league play. Siddoway was again hot, scoring 16 points, including four three-pointers. three-pointers. Jones led Viewmont with 19, Eggen had 15 and Blackham six. BONNEVILLE 51 DAVIS 36 LAYTON 54 DAVIS 37 The Lady Darts lost a pair of games last week, dropping a decision deci-sion to Bonneville Tuesday and then losing to Layton Friday. At Bonneville, Davis lost Stacy Korth to an injury, probably for the season. Three Darts scored eight points apiece in the loss: Periann Home, Shelly Harris and Tanya Fraughton. Nicole Robinson added six for Davis. Friday at Davis, the Darts suffered suf-fered another injury when sophomore star Mariam Rees tore ligaments and broke an ankle. Fraughton scored 10 points, Home nine and Chauny Morgan seven for Davis. Davis has a bye Wednesday and hosts Viewmont on Friday. The Darts are now 2-4 in league play. |
