Show RELIC HUNTERS DEFACE MONU NEWTS I It Is a great pity the vandals are not all dead but they are net They exist In all parts 0 our country and occasionally occa-sionally make their existence known In the most obnoxious manner possible An example of this was given In Boston on Memorial day I is the custom on that day to open the gates to the Old Granary burying ground on Tremcnt street In that burying ground lie the remains of men whose lives are a part of the countrys history and their memories are held dear and sacred by the American people A week ago the Old Granary burying ground was opened to the public but among those who entered the sacred precincts were some vandals and they desecrated some of the graves or rather the monuments over them The tombstones tomb-stones upon which the vandals exercised exer-cised their unholy calling were those of John Hancock Paul Revere and Increase In-crease Sumner Large pieces were chipped from them materially defacing them Who was guilty of the outrage the authorities have not been able to ascertain It matters not who they were they are vandals and a disgrace to their country In no other country In the world does the nuisance of the I relic hunter exist to the same extent as in this country The passion for relic hunting is all very well but the defacement of monument for the gratification grati-fication of I is all wrong It strange that those who are actuated by the spirit of relic hunting do not realize this No civilized person would deface a monument |
