Show I niLiTARY PHASE Investigation of TeTragedy at UrI Ur-I bana Ohio Columbus 0 June Governor I I Bushnell tonight began an official investigation i in-vestigation of the military phase of the I estgaton Axline Urbana affair AdjutantGeneral Alne afair I I assisting him The governor was In his asistng heard the I I office until late tonight and statements of Colonel Anthony of the Third regiment Captain George N I Leonard and Lieutenants R C Campbell I Camp-bell and W C Gifford of the Urbana I company I developed that Sheriff I McLain did not have telephonic communication com-munication with the governor on Fri I day night as had been reported Captain Cap-tain Leonard stated that at the time the governor talked over the telephone I as the govemor believed with the sheriff the latter was in the jail and had no means of getting to a telephone tele-phone I is believed that some of L dr 0 felons person representing himself to be the sheriff communicated with the governor and that the real facts were not made known the idea being to convey a false impression to the governor ernor The fact that Sheriff McLain telegraphed for troops Is not denied but the previous nilsInformation regarding re-garding the situation telephoned to the governor misled him in judging of the necessities the occasion demanded when the formal call for troops was made The governor will investigate the matter thoroughly The governor has received assurance that It will be perfectly sate for the ofcer of the Urbana company to return re-turn home and they will go to Urbana in a couple of days Prominent officials and citizens of Urbana have advised ctzens against civil action In Champaign county and the talk of indicting the officers of the Urbana militia I is now believed will come to naught |
