International Gold Mining Convention Con-vention Ore and Bullion Silver andLead Mining Notes and Personals Per-sonals HE indications Y are that the L SaIl mountains moun-tains in southeastern south-eastern Utah will make rapid AL strides forward this year and i Is also gratifying grati-fying to learn 4 that the merits of this riChly mineralized portion of Utah are becoming recosnized that there is reason to believe that in the near future capita will flow into that region and that the prospects of the La Salle will soon be transformed into producing mines and that the product of these mines will find its way to market mar-ket in the shape of bullion and matte for that section is to have a smelter and it Is to be honed that soon after the erection of the first one others will soon follow A representative of The Herald liad the pleasure yesterday of meeting W I B Nichols a prominent mining operator oper-ator of Butte Mont who has just returned re-turned from a visit to the L Salle mountains where he secured a bond and option on the Point Lookout group of claims owned by Thomas Daly the veteran miner and Mr Nichols states that it is his intention to have a 50ton smelter in operation on the ground within four months and even now he is figuring with the machinery men of this city and probably within the next few days will have the contracts signed up Mr Nichols states that the main mineral min-eral belt in the La Salle mountains is from two to 16 fee wide on the surface and that i can be traced for a distance of ten miles As a general thing the veins are flat and might well be termed blanket deposits But little work has been done in the development of these ore bodies but in the Point Lookout II i is estimated that 29000 tons of min oral have been blocked out which will carry average values of 10 per cent copper 16 ounce silver and 250 in gold although some of the ore will g much hicher than this I Mr Nichols is greatly impressed with the mineral wealth of this section but J he states that there is a scarcity of water although there is a good spring I at the Point Lookout mine Wood is I I not as plentiful as could be desired but this drawback is offsat by the existence of a fine bed of coal winthin two and a half miles of the mine The coal mea ures are from two to three feet in width of excellent quality and this goes with the deal on the mine and Mr Nichols is satisfied that the coal will coke well The coal will be utilized in the reduction reduc-tion of the ore and with the smelter at the mine besides other conveniences I i is believed that the property can be worked to advantage and at a profit I The formation along the strike of the La Salle ore belt is sandstone or sandstone sand-stone and porphyry and the mineral deposits are well bedded so that the properties can be easily and cheaply worked While the mines are some distance from the railroad it is stated that with the expenditure of less than 1000 inroad f in-road building the Point Lookout 1 can c 1 b brought within 45 miles of stem trariFxrtation Mr Nichols will put on a force of men in the development of the property before be-fore the 20th of the present month and while he will spend sometime in that locality and in Montana i is his intention in-tention io make this city his head Ciuartcrs rtersT THE ANCHOR COMPANY Will Put in a Chilian Mill and Ellis Concentrator Park City June 7The Anchor concentrator con-centrator which was expected to b in operation by June 10 will not start before be-fore July 1 owing to the decision to In troducea Chilian mill for grinding ore troucea Chian ml which can hardly be expected to arrive and be placed in position before that date The Ellis concentrator will also be introduced satisfactory tests having been made some time ago in Salt Lake upon Anchor ore The company ha plenty of ore for concentration This morninrr the teams commenced hauling a shipment a firstclass ore to the sampler SAM GILSON RETURNS A Wellknown TJtah Mining Operator Arrives from the South Sam Gilson who is known all over this western country a a thorough miner and who stands high in the esteem es-teem of his friends and acquaintances I returned Sunday from Georgia where r for the past two or three years he has been engaged in gold mining near Cherokee in Cherokee count There can be no doubt but that Mr Gilson Is highly Impressed with the J mineral wealth of that tenon as he Informs The Herald that it Is the best mining country in the world that is I j for gold and the object of his return I to Salt Lake is in connection wh a I bond that he has taken oil the Cherokee Chero-kee mine which he hones and Intends tQ take us before the option expires Mr Gilson states that there are placer as well as quartz mining in Georgia where he has become interested inter-ested and that the top mineral which ft ltf nm 1er ICi I is gold in a formation of schist Is j washed by means of hydraulics when I the bedded ledges r encountered in I which the gold exists In the form of sulphurets j This ore is mined and put through a stamp mill the sulphurets being saved f by concentration after which the concentrates i con-centrates are roasted and then subjected sub-jected ti > the Tierce chlorination process pro-cess by which means a very high percentage per-centage of the metallic values is seAs < se-As a general thing the average assay as-say value of the ore is from 8 to ito i-to the ton although there are large deposits de-posits from which shipments are made that go as high i as JSOO I t 1egfJe air The ledges are from eight to sixteen I feet wide and the mines are easily worked There are a number of paying propositions propo-sitions in the same locality Mr Gilson will return to Georgia within the next few days THE MINING EXCHANGE The Stock Market Weak and Transfers Trans-fers Rather Limited There was but little life manifested yesterday In the pit of the mining exchange ex-change and the This Promising Camp I Our mining industry is enjoying a little recognition just now says the Marysvale Pioneer but on accountof the snow in the mountains it is very limited as yet Local parties are beginning be-ginning work on nearly all the while several of the new properties whie se erl older ones are being handled or preparations prep-arations being made to handle by capitalists cap-italists from a distance The Chattanooga one of the famous mines in Bullion canyon owned by Mrs Llsonbee is in the hands of Charles Sank who has recently moved his family here from Salt Lake They are building a house on the ground I and intend residing there continuously I Air Hanks will work a force of men on I the property this season The Eagle a promising prospect will be vigorously worked this season I jy Frank Dalton of Dalton mine fame and other parties It was not until J late last season that the fine ores of I this prospect were unearthed therefore I sCe fore its i value cannot at present be determined de-termined with any degree of exactness but i is certain that the mine has a I future Last week a force of men set out for I the Wedge and are now making things hum at that point This is another I claim that was only sprouted late f I last alth but its fame has spread like wildfire and today there is a standing I offer C several thousand for i from Salt Lake capitalists I is owned by I F J Lyon Co Word has been officially given out I that the company represented by Mr Holler will put a strong force of men on the DOT Trail mine about OUe 7 I The Deer Trail is one of the oldest and most reliable mines in this Section of country and Mr Holier has been for the past two months making a thorough thor-ough test of its ores I is a half silver and half gold proposition and it is the presence of the latter no doubt that Induces the company to operate on the property James Bolitho came up from Richfield I Rich-field last week to continue work on the I I Rising Sun After timbering shaft No 2 for about 50 feet further he expects I ex-pects to have some parties come herewith here-with a view to purchase With a cuartz mill at the Crystal j Burleigh drill at the NoYouDont a large force cf men steadily employed at the Deer Trail and no less than 12 of thenewly dlscovered uronerties doing active mining all of which will be seen this present season Marysvale will assume a look of thrift and energy she has not experienced in ear I Old Star District Considerable work is now going on In old Star district in Beaver county and i is more than likely that this grand old camp will forge to the front this seas nAt n-At the present time Matt Cullen is working a force of four men in the development of the Burning Moscow Some time age a large body of low grade ore was encountered in this property prop-erty but now the men are following a seam of rich ore the indications being be-ing that i will open out Into one of the rich chimneys that are so characteristic i charac-teristic of this mine which has been I a noted producer in the past John T Kelly Is working the Anvil I just over the hill from the Burning I Moscow and Tit Herald is informed that he I taking out ore from a rich chute or pocket that carries values of 40 per cent lead 380 ounces silver and 10 in gold to the ton Mr Kelly generally gen-erally ships but twice a year and as he had a consignment early In the spring it Is more than likely that he will have another lot in the market some time during the coming fall P S Martin the veteran miner is working away on the Marlngo jn the same district and i Is understood that he has a promising showing = to go on The Grow Mining Company The Grow Gold Mining and Milling company mention of which from time i n to time has been made in these columns I umns is pushing work in the dev lcp ment of Its promising group of claims located at the head of Kesslers canyon can-yon in West Mountain mining district mining I and from Joseph S Grow one of the directors of the company i is learned that the outlook Is very encouraging and that work is progressing finely in the driving of the 500foot tunnel I which Is to cut the ledge at a vertical I I verti-cal depth of 500 feet I This tunnel is now in a distance of 150 feet and already at 90 feet a five foot ledge of quartz and lime carbonates carbon-ates has been cut that carries gold values of 1 to 3 in gold and the ore is free milling and pans well The company has two shifts at work and expects to make a great showing this season I has comfortable buildings build-ings at the mine and is prepared for active work Above the tunnel now bring driven an SOfoot incline was driven a year ago and this has crosscut cross-cut a mammoth gold ledge that carried car-ried encouraging values but which was considerably broken up so it was decided to begin lower down and attain at-tain depth with the belief that the ledge deeper down would be more compact I com-pact and at the same time the values would increase C M Mclntire of Mercur is working adjoining property in the Interest of Colorado capital The Brickyard Bonded The Herald was informed authoritatively authorita-tively yesterday that Captain J R De Lamar had secured a 90day option and bond on the interests of John Dern I E H Airis Colonel E A Wall and Matt GIsborn in the Brickyard Mining company and it Is stated that i the I deal is consummated this valuable property will be added to the Golden Gate holdings Mr H A Cohn who has the general management of Captain DeLamars Utah and Nevada mining interests left last night for Pioche on business He expects to return within the next ten days and it is believed that after his arrival some good news will be given t er et I out by him relative to Mercur operations opera-tions I The Buckeye Mine Encouraging reports continue to come in from the Buckeye mine In the Silver City country and it is reported ported that this property is improving as development work progresses A shipment of 13 tons of ore was received re-ceived from the Buckeye yesterday that assayed 37 per cent lead 3S5 ounces silver and 440 in gold to the ton and i is stated that another consignment of this grade of ore is being loaded at the mine and that it will not be bag before still another lot will be ready The consignment marketed yesterday represents a good paying proposition and the company is well pleased over the outlook for the property and the manner in which it is opening ui I Will Work the Annie Provo June 7Stockholders of the Annie mine among whom are Dr Mc Curtain Red Swazey and Ed fL Jones held a short meeting this morning and have decided to expend something near 1000 in sinking a shaft on this property prop-erty I While Dr McCurtain was in Chicago he partially bargained for a steam hoist which will probably reach Tintic II in about three weeks and will be put in operation at the Peru mine I International Gold Mining Convention I Conven-tion Denver Colo June 7From present indications the International gold mining min-ing convention to be held here July II 7 S and 9 will exceed in magnitude even the most radical expectations of Its promoters From 200 to 700 letters tf j of inquiry i are received daily evidencing evidenc-ing the fact that there is an undercurrent undercur-rent of Interest the strength of which would be difficult to estimate Secretary Irvin Mahon said today The convention will bring 10000 people to Denver and this is a minimum estimate es-timate J Silver and Lead I The silver and lend quotations yesterday yester-day were as follows Bir silver 60
