| Show THREE MODERN EXPLORERS I is probable that Henry M Stanley Stan-ley is thelast of the great explorers of the class of Columbus Da Gana and Magellan chiefly for the reason that the unexplored regions of the earth have been reduced to a comparatively small area Stanley meted out to muti neers exactly the same kind of punishment punish-ment that Magellan did though I is hardly probable that he could have visited such cruelties upon any one as Da Gama inflicted on his second voy I age upon those who had treated him badly upon his first voyage I Still while it is probable that Stanley Stan-ley is the last of the old line of explorers ex-plorers yet there are some great explorers ex-plorers In the world at the present time tme and it is rather a remarkable fact that the three that may be said to be among the most prominent are all Scandlnavl lans They a Nansen Carl Lumholtz II and Dr Hedin The most famous of the three is Nan sen and just now he is the hero of the hour as Stanley was 20 years ago Lumholtz came Into prominence as an explorer some years ago through the publication of his work Among Cannibals Can-nibals The book never enjoyed anything any-thing like the popularity of Fartherest North In fact never enjoyed the popularity pop-ularity it deserved For the past three years Lumholtz has been making explorations ex-plorations and discoveries in Mexico and Central America and I is expected that his book detailing the story of his work will be an event in the literary world The third in this trio of Scandinavians Scandinavi-ans Is Dr Hedin who has been making explorations in Central Asia having been sent there some three and a half years ago by King Oscar He spent a year or two in Persia pushed on through to Russian Turkestan crossing cross-Ing the Pamirs finally reaching Pekin and from there telegraphing his sovereign The blood o the old Norsemen runs in the veins of these modern explorers and it is that which urges them on and causes seemingly insurmountable obstacles ob-stacles to be overcome by their Indomitable Indom-itable will Their pursuits are different differ-ent from those of their ancestors but their achievements prove that Peace hat her victories I No less renowned than war |
