Show I I PUBLIC BUILDINGS I Chicago Occupies the Attention ol tIle Senate Washington Jan 21In the House today to-day on ttiotloii of Mr Outhwaite Democrat Demo-crat of Ohio Mr J D Richardson of Tennessee was elected speaker pro tern during the absence of Mr Crisp who is In Asheville N C for his health I On motion of Mr HcRae Democrat of Arkansas a resolution was adopted to S direct the secretary of the interior to furnish fur-nish an estimate of the cost of surveying the lands of the Cherokee Creek and Semin > le Indians in the Indian territory Mr Catchings Democrat of Mississippi Missis-sippi from the committee on rules presented 1 pre-sented a special order for the consideration considera-tion of the bills for public buildings including In-cluding the one for Chicago On a rising vote it was ordered 159 to 11mt 1r ChirHs R n11hl 11 1 of Kan paz made the point of no quorum Later then he attempted to withdraw the point it was renewed by Mr English The previous question was ordered and the special order was adopted without I I division I I The House then went into commlttes I ot the whole and by the terms of the 1 order took up the Chicago bill It authorized j au-thorized the erection of a public building at Chicago to cost S40000i but the appropriating ap-propriating clause at the session on August Au-gust 8 had been stricken from the bill > Jr Baukhead Democrat of Alabama chairman of the committee on public buildings took the floor and explained the necessity for the building Mr Sayres Democrat of Texas chairman chair-man of the committee on appropriations opposed the passage of the mil I Mr Bankhead being appealed to by i 7 > lr Sayres expressed the opinion that the building was safe at least as safe as 1 many others 2Ir Sayres denounced the postmaster at t Chicago for being in Washington lobby I ing in favor of this bill instead of re 1 J iwiinitter at Chicago attending to his own 1 business If such bills as these were I 1 passdfl Mr Sayres warned Ids colleagues t r I that this would be classed with the billion I bil-lion dollar Congress I Mr Mefinii fUcmocratl of Illinois de dared that this building had been condemned 4 con-demned by a commission taat examined it in 1875 by a commission of engineer and by every supervusing architect who had given an official utterance on the subject I The bill was ardently supported by sersbiiokfns gm Messrs Hopkins JMcGann Goldzler and Aldrich It was amended so as to provide for the objections raised though still providing for speedy work and to cost 4000000 At 230 p m on motion Of itr Beak head and the terms of the special order b the committee rose and reported the bill aiong favorably with the other six bills Mr Sayers demanded the ayes and nays on the final passage of the bill and the bill was passed 137 to 51 The other bills were then taken up in their order and passed as follows For > Tewf > ort Ky 73000 South Omaha JCeb S100000 Mr Boutelle made an ineffectual effort to bring his H Hawaiian resolution up and then at 4 oclock the House adjourned |
