Show A PBI3IB NECESSITY The great anxiety of the Republicans erf Utab just now including of course our morning contemporary which declares de-clares fit is not a Republican organ ia to gain for their party control of the Constitutional Convention For that they are ready to do almost anything That was the motive power behind the tremendous struggle last fall It means the opportunity to shoestring this territory in the interest of tIhat party so as to secure the first state legislature That would meanthe election elec-tion of two Republican United States Senators and that 1s the great desideratum de-sideratum of the National Republican party The reason why tie Democrats of Utah have feared the catastrophe of a Republican Constitutional convention was tihat it was announced in the beginning be-ginning of the campaign that a partisan I parti-san constitution was the Republican I I purpose The idea of a nonpartisan body to frame a nonpartisan constitution I I consti-tution was scouted and opposed The exertions made and he money spent and offered were wittti that Republican purpose in view j The only ehoestringing business ever attempted in Utah was that accomplished accom-plished by a Republican Commission Whalt the party has done the party may do again Theendeavor once in a while to intimate that the Demo I crats if in control of the convention would do a similar thing in the interest < inter-est of their party is a Trtbuneism I I there is nothing in it The determination < determina-tion of the Democrats has been and will be to prevent anything but a just measure of districting and a fair I and equitable apportionment This must be according to population and contiguity of territory The present arrangement is absurd and dishonest i i It was effected first for Liberal advantage j advan-tage second for Republican advantage I advan-tage when Liberalism should pass 1 away Whatever may be the political I I compotion of the convention supposing I sup-posing Republican obstruction does not prevent its being held at alla I falir just and equitable districting and I apportionment must be made without any regard for its probable effect upon parties The convenience of the people must be before party necessity and honorable I honor-able Republicans and Democrats alike should be determined upon that There are men of both parties elected to that convention whom we believe to be above all improper motives in such respects There are some persons I however who would not scruple to resort I re-sort to any trick in order to acconi t plish party ends and who will be ready with plausible excuses for what they have in mind They must not be allowed to rule The good of the i whole people must be the prime purpose pur-pose in view I |
