and mi Evening nt the Grand The knights of the quill shears and paste pot owned the town in general and the Knutsford the Sanitarium and the Grand Opera house in particular yesterday l i I The country editors in convention assembled at the Knutsford transacted trans-acted the routine fbusin s incident to the annual meeting of the Utah Press association and discussed subsets of in terest to the newspaper fraternity They are a jolly and not at all bad f looking set of fellows and thoroughly enjoyed their day of freedom from the onerous duty of moulding public I opinion publc At 1030 a m the meeting was catled to order with E A Littlefield cafe chair Messrs Bjosejtrbaum Paradise and Dieihl were appointed a committee on credentials and lIe srs Foster I Jackson and Shoemaker a committee on i the order of business for the day The committee 0 credentials reported the following list of duly accredited members of the association most of mo3 i whom were in attendance E G Rog non Salt Lake W membership in the assooia I ton he not being at present engaged j in newspaper work reconvnanciecl that his name be placed on the list cf honorary hon-orary members and the rcptrt was adoptel Mr Ernest G Rognon was elected president of the association Joel Shoemaker I Shoe-maker first vicepresident S I Paradise Para-dise second vicepresident and E ALi A-Li < lefieId third vicepresident Fred Nelson recording secretary A B Tom I Son corresponding secretary and A H Ro5enbanimf treasurer Mr Rognon made 3 verbal report of the committee on legislation At 130 the association reconvened and Mr Rognon was installed as president presi-dent dentMessrs Messrs Foster Thompson and Scott were appointed a committee for the I revision of the constitution of the association sociation with instructions to report at a special meeting to be called withIn I with-in ninety days There was a discussion as to the rate for legal notices and the matter was referred to the committee on legisla tion Incidentally the libel question wa touched upon in fact handled without gloves the sentiment of thfe association associa-tion being that the 1 tle person furnishing I such information t a reporter as will make the paper he represents 11j I ale to damages far libel should be held responsible by law A communication from Franklin G Adams of the Kansas Historical Society iety urging that a similar society be organized in Utah was read This led to a discussion of the merits of a historical society Mr Shoemaker stating that he once had occasion to use a list of names of the governors of Utah He Ut had asked nineteen men for SUM a list and not one was able to furnish i He found it ait last in the office of the church historian At this and other times he ihad made about fifty dollars out of the church history and he was strongly in favor of historical societies for mercenary reasons not to speak of better ones Mr Warren Foster also favored such 1 an organization I The chair appointed Mr Foster temporary historian and it was suggested that copies of all Utalh papers be sent him for preservation tionAt 430 the association adjourned subject ito a call of the executive committee com-mittee < wfaich call will probably b made during he session of the consti tutional convention The quill drivers then repaired in a body to the sanitarium where if they did not wash away all sins of omission omis-sion and commission in the way of oversights and libellous attacks they did get rid of some ink stains al due to the courtesy of Mr J H Bacon At 6 p m they surrounded a ban auetfting board at the Knutsford where they were the guests of Presideni Rognon and many were the good natured na-tured thrusts dealt while the menu was discussed Thirty seats at the Grand Opera House had been tendered by the management man-agement and these were occupied by the journalists and some ladies o ithei parity last evening |
