Show Littlo loaguers go A 6-- k Utah October 1974 3, Thursday, good week for local gridders Twos Brigham 70-The 70-team defeated a stubborn and good Pleasant View Team 0 at Watkins Park on Saturday. Brigham dominated play through out the game but bogged down two times within the P.V. 14 yard line and had one T.D. nulified by a motion penalty. The only score of the game came in the third quarter on a dive play by Kelly Schiffler. The hole was made by the left side of the Brigham line, Jim Eskelson, Kent Poelman and Tom Thurston. These boys along with ends Willie Iverson, Robert McDonald, Greg McGee, and wing-bacCory Menlove consistently blocked well on left side plays. Richard Hadley was Brighams leading ground gainer with 130 yards rushing. Lead blocks by backs Menlove and Schiffler contributed greatly to his success. The defense again was strong allowing Pleasant View only one first down and limiting them to 50 total yards. Pleasant View only crossed the 50 yard line once during the contest. Jon Duran, Tom Williams, Schiffler, Menlove, Tom and Tim Thurston, Brian Windley, Eskelson, Nate Chappell, Dirk and Derek Roundy were all credited with making two or BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, 8-1- -1 more tackles. However, good pursuit and gang tackling was and is the key to Brighams defensive successes. Next week we play Ogden East at 11 : 15 and hope for another win. 70-- B East Still Undefeated The undefeated Brigham City East squad ripped a good 2 Bountiful team Saturday on the Brigham City Watkins 70-- B 33-1- park field. Brigham City lost no time in establishing supremacy in the game as they held Bountiful on the first series of the game then marched down to score when they got the ball. It was a well balanced ground attact with the speedy Brigham backs all collecting scoring honors. Matt Yeates, left half; Nick Smith, fullback and Justin Dolling, right half along with quarterback Jim Davis all scored for the local bunch. Brigham City held a 26-- 0 halftime edge. Tuff Coach Brigham Claybaugh said he felt it was the strong blocking from the Brigham City offensive line which spelled the difference, but the coach said, the backs blocked well also. On that tough offensive line is Kleigh Humphery at left end. Brad Walker, left tackle, Casey Claybaugh and Doug Munson alternating at left guard, Jon K.C. center, Erickson, Stevenson right guard, Andy Henchman right tackle and Dennis Nelson right end. The coach also had praise for defensive ends Troy Dunlavy and Scott Stevens. The next game for the 70-- f East squad will be their toughest test of the season as they meet undefeated River-dale. The game will likely be for the 70-East division championship with just one game remaining on each teams schedule. The game will be played at 10 a.m. on hte Brigham City Watkins park field. Brigham 70-- B North With the sun shining and good football conditions Brigham North traveled to Logan for the game of the week. Brigham won the toss with the offensive team going three downs for a first down. Logan defense moved in and kept Brigham from driving down field after four more downs. Logan started their drive and on the 15 yard line fumbled the ball which was recovered by Tony Taylor of the Brigham defensive team. Tension was off after this recovery, however, the offense could not move the ball and with a punt by Shane Whitehead, Logan took over and ran it back to Brighams 40 yard line. At this point a clipping penalty on Logan helped Brighams defense keep Logan in the middle of the field. Logan proceeded for another first down when a fumble was recovered by Brighams Ricky Huot. The half ended with Brigham on Logans 15 yard Punt, pass Local youngsters, between the ages of 8 and 13 will be competing on Friday, Oct. 4, for one of 18 trophies in the first level of Punt, Pass and Kick competition "at 5 p.m. at the baseball field at Rees Park. PP&K is an an annual event, by the National Football League and the Ford dealers of America. First, second and third place winners of local competition in each of the six age groups will receive a trophy. More than 2,000 girls competed alongside the boys in last Brad Gibbs has Running been selected as this weeks player for the Bear River Bears for his work in the Bears 2 loss to tough Sky View. Gibbs scored both Bear touchdowns one run from scrimmage, the other on a on a punt return. He amassed 148 yards rushing on 21 carries. A son of, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Gibbs of Portage, the senior also had a fine night on defense, making seven tackles and five back-lineback- er 14-1- 72-ya- rd 75-ya- rd assists. He has lettered the past two years on the schools wrestling team. Bear River coaches named the the top player for which he, like other players of the week, will receive an engraved plaque from the News & Journal at the end of the season. 5-- 7, years PP&K competition, according to a Ford spokesman--anthe number is expected to be even greater this year. Girls or boys registering for PP&K must be 8 through 13 years of age and accompanied by a parent or guardian to any participating Ford Dealership. There is no body contact in PP&K and no special equipd ment needed. Youngsters compete only against others in their own age group and participation does not impair a youngsters amateur standing. Lorrin Widdison and Brock McMillan, they drove 60 yards in eight plays for the score. Kort Lyons' scored the touchdown from 15 yards out during the drive. Russell Case had a run during the drive. Brigham Citys execution was great throughout the entire game and was led by quarterback Brett Adams and consisting of halfbacks Hall, Case and fullback Lyons. Williams Stan Coach defensive team allowed Farmingtons offensive team only 18 total yards for the entire game. The defense consists of Sean Richards, Jody Williams, Jon Armstrong, Stephen Christensen, David Hunt, Kent Peterson, Troy Peabody, Todd Richards, David Russell, Tyler Stokes, and Jeff Williams. Todd Richards, John Armstrong and David Russell were outstanding having nine, eight and seven tackles respectively. Picked as the outstanding offensive player of the game was Kort Lyons who carried the ball 14 times for 88 yards, an average of 6.3 yards per carry. The outstanding defensive player was Todd Richards who had a pass interception besides his nine tackles, one of which was a great touchdown saving dive tackle from behind the ball carrier. Brigham City 70-- North play North Ogden in North Ogden at 10 a.m. next Saturday. C Lunch for Demonstration Drive in a new MAZDA East East team to 0. The Brigham defense superb and held Riverdale minus 20 yards rushing. defensive line of Marty dard, Boyd Coddington, 621-11- The God- Dan Minert, Crig Smith, Greg Beecher, Geroge Tolman, Michael Begaii, Jim Marshall, and Tom Olsen penetrated Riverdales offensive line causing a consistent loss of yardage. Linebackers Tom Leopardi, Robbie Carver, Tim Larsen, Tyler Bockmeyer, Bobby Newman, and Brett Goldsberry stopped the running plays for short gains. The offense, Brigham directed by quarterback Lance Velasquez, was besieged by penalties in the first half but. still managed to retain the ball and dominate ths game. Two tremendous runs by Tom Olsen resulted in scores and the clever running of running back Robbie Carver scored points after. Good blocking by Todd Baxter, Curt Robinette, Richard Andrus, Dan Coates, Troy Jensen, Kyle Smith, Marty Goddard, Jim Marshall, Shorland Juber, Ken Christoffersen made it possible for the backfield of Brett Robbie Goldsberry, Carver and Tom Olsen to roll up 217 yards rushing before the game ended. A beautiful quarterback sneak executed by Lance Velasquez resulted in a touchdown but it was called back because of an offensive procedure penalty. This Saturday Brigham East meets Coalville at Coalville at 3 p.m. Brigham 85-- A Team s The battled a tough Logan team and came out on top 15 to 0. The Logan defense stopped Brighams first drive but on the second series Kirk Baty sprinted 20 yards and then Joel Huff took the ball in from the 10 yard line. Tony Smith charged in for the point after. On the kickoff to Logan Todd Morrison forced a fumble and Chad Reeves recovered the ball for Brigham. Although the Brigham City offense didn't score, a 25 yard pass from Kipp Baty to Todd Morrison put the ball deep into Logan territory. Tremendous defensive play by John Cox, Mike Pulsipher, Leslie Chlarson and Rex Butler pushed Logan back until the : Logan ball carrier was tackled in the end zone to add two points to the Brigham score. The second half was a defensive battle and although the Logan defense was excellent, the Brigham defense was better. Brigham tackles, David Jensen, John Minert, Mike Kempf, Leslie Chlarson and Mike Pulsipher dropped Logan ball carriers for losses ' 23 totalling yards. Phillip Menlove forced a fumble and Andy Yeates alertly recovered. Mike Kempf intercepted a Logan pass and sprinted 50 yards into the end zone to dash Logans hopes for scoring. Defeat South Ogden The East 85-team defeated South Ogden 13-- 0 at South Ogden on Saturday morning bringing the Brigham win loss record for the season thus far to 4 wins and 1 tie. Both the defensive and offensive units again turned in outstanding performances. South Ogdens only serious scoring threat came late in the first quarter after a march from their own 45 to the Brigham one yard line with first down and goal to go. A determined defensive team threw the opposition for losses on the first three plays and foiled an attempted pass on the 85-B- touchdown. John Sargent made several good plays at defensive end. The defensive line play of Rick Thomas, Matt Smoot, Troy Karlinsky, Art Huot, Vern Iverson, Lynn Merritt, Grant Aston, Barnhart and Williams was solid. Raynard Etsitty, Allen Dowdle, Brad Peterson and Steve Laird turned in good performances on the specialty and offensive units. The first drive went 74 yards in nine plays with Adams scoring from the two yard line on a fullback drive, on the second possession, Rock went 23 and Udy went 24 for the score. The third possession revealed two fine pass plays with Rock going 30 yards on a swing pattern and Huot taking in a running pass in full stride to race 50 yards for the score. Fletcher converted on a quick pitch. In the final drive of the game, Williams exhibited some power running to go 40 yards and Jepperson was pushed out inside the ons yard line at the gun. s Suffer Defeat Brigham 120 Ties Brigham City 120 pound team played another hard fought defensive battle at Pleasant View this week and ended with a 6 to 6 tie. Excellent defense by David Smith, Steve Thompson, Mike Hinchman, Eric West and Kevin Keller held the opponents scoreless in the first half and caused them to fumble the ball four times. Fumble recoveries were made by Kirk Secrist, Hinchman, Smith and Brian Braithwaite. Brighams scoring drive came late in the first half starting on their own 23 yard line. Runs by Danny Hendricks, Ken Keller and Kevin Keller Swim instructor plans new classes Small group swimming classes will be offered in the immediate future for students five years old and up by a certified American Red Cross instructor in Elwood. k Ten lessons will be given in a period twice a week one on a weekday after school and one on Saturday. five-wee- The instructor, Ron Mortensen, will teach the classes at a pool at his home in Elwood, just five minutes from Honey ville and Bear River City. The pool is heated and filtered and will be covered by a bubble during the cold weather. Adult classes will be taught Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The pool may be rented on an hourly basis. A good punt by Shane Whitehead way down field was touched by two Logan boys when to their suprise Jeff Shannon and Morgan Whitehead recovered the ball for good field position. Logan again fumbled the ball was again recovered by Bruce Simmons. With time running out Darin Wight at quarterback threw a pass to Stanford Etsitty who shook off his tacklers and headed for the only T.D. of the day. The 50 yard run put the score 6 to 0 in favor of Brigha, however, the try for extra point failed and the gun went off to end the game. Playing outstanding defense for Brigham were Allen Earl, Ricky Huot, Tony Taylor, Bruce Simmons, Jeff Crozier, Chad Herbert, Peter Bejaii, Cody Mounteer, Cirtis Hill, Matt Mozingo, Mike Lavery, John David Tommy Parsons, Miggins, Mike Richards and Don Davis. The offensive unit that kept running into a good Logan defense were: Stanford Etsitty, Darin Wight, Craig Clement, Shane Whitehead, Ricky Bywater, Boyd Davis, Greg Jeppesen, Scott Landon, Jeff Morgan, Shannon Whitehead, Pat Lavery, Mike Rooda, John David Parsons, Chad Herbert, and' Allen Earl.
