Show CITY VS COUNTRY lire LIFE alaa may blay rr frailer ULler of woodruff fr makes blakes a strong effort in favor of country life lie in a debate recently held by the grant society at salt lake city miss president honorable judges respectful ful opponents ladies and gentlemen grant society I 1 resolve that country life is more beneficial to human development than city life we cannot think ot the country without respect and love for the good it contains and sustains there atmosphere cannot be anything but pure while the atmosphere phere in th city is not pure and it is sending hundreds of people to the grave every yer yo r the houses are built so closely together that houses cannot be satisfactorily ventilated then there is the amke ami ke sewer gas and alth around so many balk back doors it is a wonder that more people do not die than do thirty people die in the city to one in the country of course you will say that is because there are more in the city but I 1 mean take the same number you will say there are better schools in the city now wait and we shall see the country has graded schools and they are run on the same plan that the city schools are we know after af ter we pass out of the school tho the city then has tte advantage for there are a higher institution of learning but there should be because there are a greater population and a city has wore more help to keep such institutions I 1 am sure bare the pleasures in the country are fully as good as in the city but on a smaller smaller scale of 0 course the pleasures in a city ha 0 to be more various as tha population is greater and there are more mora tastes to gratify and requires more As for the schools in the city what good can tb they by do you without health it is cruel the way some parents see sea their ch children idren bacome weaker and arill say they the would net go to the country when that is all the little ones need there are tho in school that have no business being there for they are gradually losing cheit strength and become physical wrecks in iii the french and indian war did not the english fight with greater zeal than the french they were fighting for their homes in the city most of the people rent and when they cant pay their rent they move it is cheaper to move than to pay rent there are so few people we should say few on account of the great population that have steady work thre are hundreds that work one day out of un there are many women bome children as well as men that are in the streets n not at only without food but without shelter to protect them from the cold winter rain and wind you notice ever so oft often the city has to organize soup houses and lodging places for such in the chuu try you have none of those hub instead you have your house and raise what is ie sufficient to live on at least think how happy a farmer and his bis family are when lie he comes iti III from w rk at night he be knows he has a job next dav where a city man to ilo s not know when or how long he will have work A family circle in a farmers home is much hap pier than in a city roans mans house for lie he is more affectionate and attentive to his bis family vice is so great in the city one is is noi nob safe to leave homo home after dark at n night both doors and windows mut must be locked in the country they are never locked I 1 there are the cattle that the farmers raise and get ready for market and vegetables ol of all kinds and grains that nuke make the staple food of our life bread I 1 all of these are produced in the coun try and tho the city is dependent on the country tor for them you can get the milk in a pure state while it is not always pure in the city it is usually half water in summer there is no DO comfort the air is so sultry that you cannot get a breath of air women uso use gasoline stoves so BO as not to heat beat the house which is already heated by the hot son and at night i it t is ia like going into a sweat box to try to sleep in the country you can sleep so BO sweetly as aa there Is 18 a soft breeze from some direction always for amusements what is nicer than to own your own horses and carriage and go for or a delightful ride whenever you feel disposed to do so city people are more classified and are ignorant of tho the tact fact that they dont know how bow to be sociable and as aa a rule aged people are not treat ed with as much respect as in the country also a servant girl if ebo ia respectable spec table is not set aside agide but Is ia treated the same as one of the family eats at the earne table and it if she has company she may occupy the best room in the house whereas in the city a servant 18 is iut in the kitchen with her company eats at another table and ii tre treated abed as aa though she belonged to some other class of beings you might be neighbors here in the city for several years and at the end of the specified time not know each other here are a few questions i could any of you write a story about the city to compare with evangeline 2nd and could there be more purer thoughts found 7 3rd ard do the people of the city compare with those jtb ath are the peoples hearts open to iu all as aa theirs thears were ath Is there more happiness and lovo love for one another ath in a gathering do each one try to make every one happy ath are the people as free in the city as in the country I 1 will not leave these questions for you to answer but will answer it in one word woid myself not nol and why not because this is a country the country is dependent upon itself where the city is wholly dependent upon the country if it was not tor for the country the city would crumble away for life ig sustained by the products produced there our greatest man washington and lincoln was reared in a country and who Is and should be honored more mora than them the country is the natural abode of man and such it was intended by our creator we all know man made the city but god made the country and there man should dwell where he be is in constant communion with nature my aly worthy opponent what is there to hinder being libraries in the country also what nv would the city do if the farmers crops should fail |
