Show Prominent Local Youth Killed In Snow Storm Near Stockton Tiie entire community was shocked Tuesday to learn of the death of Earl J. McTague, Jr., 19, prominent youth and athlete, who was killed around noon that day, when struck by the crack Union Pacific passenger train near Stockton. Earl entered the service of the Union Pacific building and bridge force at Stockton Monday. On account of the storm Monday, Tuesday was his first day in the field. When the men knocked off work at noon for dinner they were proceeding along the track near the Stockton depot when the limited train approached from the north. His companion, De Von Edwards, stepped aside, but Earl unaware of the train, did not do so. The warning came to him too late or else confused hi mi He was struck by a bar on the locomotive and thrown about forty feet. His neck was broken brok-en and he sustained concussion of the brain in the fall, remaining unconscious uncon-scious until he died half an hour later, lat-er, and before a physician summoned from Tooele could reach him. Deputy Sheriff Bert Smith of Tooele county investigated and the body was taken in charge by the undertaker of Tooele until the arrival of the boy's father and Warren Anderson of the Anderson Bros. Undertaking establishment estab-lishment that evening. The young man was horn in Bingham Bing-ham Canyon May 12, 1909, -the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl McTague. When just 9. small child the family moved to American Fork, where they have Since resided. He attended the grade schools here, and graduated from the American Fork high school in 1927. He was prominent in" basketball and had been on the school track team. He has also attended the Brigham Young university, where he was active ac-tive in athletics. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl J. McTague, Sr., two brothers, broth-ers, Wayne and Harry, and a sister, Marie, all of this city. Funeral services are being held today to-day (Saturday) at 2 p. m. in the Third ward chapel. Previous to the services, the body may he viewed at the family residence. |
