The agitation of the eight hour law is gaming some headway again, and it is possible that a movement in favor of its adoption may, with the Government setting set-ting the example, obtain considerable momentum. On previous occasions when this subject has been presented to employers em-ployers it has been resisted with more or less earnestness, but it is certain that now in a great many lines of industry no great opposition would be made to it Where the piece system does nntn. vail at it would come into force immediately immedi-ately after the change in the hours of work, and thus, . while efficient men might make as much in eight hours as they do now under the dav-work plan a large number of employes would find their earnings "materially curtailed. In such industries as do not permit of piecework, piece-work, wages would inevitably adjust themselves to the eight hour plan if it was insisted upon.
