Show Dement's Detective Work. Surveyor-General Dement, of Utah, is now dining sumptuously on dirt pie. He first gave the correspondents a detailed and startling account of huge land frauds in which Senators, Representatives and many other high officials were alleged to be implicated, and for a day posed as a mighty detective and wondrous worker in the cause of reform. Then he was j called before the Senate Committee on Public Lands to make good his charges, but instead he ingloriously backed down, and declared that he had given utterance ! to no interview on the land question, and that the correspondents had lied. Now the correspondents are prepared to prove that Dement not only furnished the published pub-lished statements, but also supplied the paper on which they were written. Dement De-ment is certainly up to his eyes in trouble. His ears, of course, can't be over-topped! San Francisco Post, 3d. |
