Show CUE OF BATTERY 001 OF SERVICE When a car 4s to stand idle for any considerable period, as whon it is laid up for the winter months, says Manager Mana-ger C. W. Iverson of the Electric Starter Start-er and Storage Battery company, the battery should not be left on the car without attentio.n When a car is likely to be out of service as long as one month, but less than two, be careful to add water to the cells just before the last time the car is used and endeavor then to run the car (using lamps sparingly) so that the battery will be as nearly fully ful-ly charged as possible, the specific gravity of the electrolyte reading between be-tween 1.270 and 1.300. Disconnect the wires of the battery, as even a slight lpak in the wiring will cause tho battery bat-tery to discharge. When a car is likely to be out of service for two months or longer, send tho battery to a reliable garago where It will rdceive proper attention. If this is not practicable, the battery should be taken out of the car and treated as follows: Removo filling plugs and add pure water until tho level reaches the bottoms bot-toms of tho filling tube. Replace filling fill-ing plugs, turning them as far aa they will go to insure their being firmly seated. Never charge a battery with tho filling plugs out, as tho automatic vents are then closed and flooding may result. Put on charge at the proper current rate and continuo the charge until the specific gravity of the electrolyte In all cells ,as shown by tho hydrometer syringe, has held at a maximium (ceased to rise) for a period of five hours and all the cells are gassing freely. When fully charged, place the battery where it will be dry, cool and free from dust. Once every two months during the out of service period .remove filling plugs and add water, replace plugs and givo battery what is known as a "freshening charge;" that is, charge until all cells have been gassing freely free-ly and evenly for one hour. Then the battery may be allowed to stand for another two months. |
