BY RUTH TOLMAN Miss Charlotte Sheffield Now Touring Europe Miss United States, Charlotte Sheffield of Utah, has achieved a great measure of fame and for-tune because she has put into prac-tice the secrets of charm used by all really lovely women. The sec-rets of charm which are now avail-able to not only those who have money or social prestige or high-er education, b .t to you and to me. The secrets of charm are the keys that open the doors to the vr.ried rooms in the House of Beauty. What are the chambers in this. House? Before we can answ-er this question, we must ask our-selves, what is charm? After many years in the field of modeling, and the opportunity of, teaching Charlotte Sheffield and many other beautiful and success-ful women, I believe that charm is the total person: her personali-ty, her attitudes, her graciousness, her speaking voice, her appear-ance: her figure, her clothes, her Are You A Venus De Milo? The ideal feminine figure today is not precisely like that of Venus De Milo, in fact, the modern male would probably consider her too plump for his 20th century streaml-ined conception of beauty. Yes, just as the up-to-da- te automobile has been assembled with an eye to speed, grace and economy, so the up-to-d- woman, has become streamlined in her contours. During the last ten years there has been a drop of five pounds o: weight per woman in the United' States per woman, this indicates the trend toward the lissome, ath-letic figure which is never fat, ne--j ver flabby, never badly proport-ioned. Although you are probably not aspiring to become a beauty queen on a national basis, you might like to know what figure qualities the judges look for. These are: 1. Good Proportion: The should-ers must be wider than the hips and. slope at a 20 degree angle from the neck to the tip of the shoulders. 2. Proper Weight: This should be approximately 100 pounds for the contestant five feet tall and an extra five pounds for each inch over five feet. 3. Correct Posture: From the front an imaginary line through' the center of-th- head must pass through the center of the neck, and torso, dividing the legs. Fromi the side the neck should be straight from hairline to should-ers, the shoulder blades must be flat, the bosom high, a shallow curve in the back at the waist-line, abdomen flat, buttocks nor-mal, and feet straight ahead. 4. Pleasing Contour: ..The head should be the crowning glory of the body. The lines of the arms should be full but graceful. The ed but not accented. The legs must fuse at the hips, knees, calves. The heels should join together with little space shown separating the legs. It will be fun to be your own judge. Take a mirror test and see yourself as you are today, then outline a program of diet and exercise that will make you a queen of beauty. make-up- , her hair, her grace. Yes, charm is within the reach of any woman who will take the time and effort to create an aura of beauty within and about herself. These articles will be devoted to making charm less difficult to achieve; for like all else, it will be less elusive if you know how to capture it and make it your own. But just as the house you live in is distinctive only when it expresses the unique and indivi-dual you, so charm is attained on-ly through personal distinction. Just as though we were at your side, we will hand to you as the weeks go by the keys that can unfold for you a new beauty, a new life, and perhaps even a new love. Just reading the secrets or dreaming about them will not make you more charming. But if you will put forth consistent ef-fort, your power to charm will be limitless. t Shall we begin with the obvious your figure? It.will be extremely important for you to be objective about what you see in the mirror. Try to see yourself as others see you. Appraise the good, the bad, and the indifferent and accept them as facts. Do you weigh what you should for your height? Is you figure what you want it to be? Whatever you detect, jot it down in your charm notebook and resolve now to do some-..- .. thing about it the right things. Next week we will analyze the factors that add up to the ideal figure. $10,000,009 Nickel Exploration Discovery' of the new nickel de-posits by International Nickel in jthe Mystery - Moak Lakes area of Manitoba, Canada, involved explo-ration costs of 513.000,000 over a period of ten years. i VC : v. MOTOR MAIDS J A Policeman's Lot Is Not A Happy One By Jeanne Smith, Dodge Safety Consultant TIIIS LINE from the famous Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "Pirates of Penzance" is perhaps appropriate in our highways today: "A policeman's lot is not a happy one." As proof, a r recent running gun battle I through the . states of Mich . igan and Indi-- ' ana and the j resultant slay- - ing of two I highway pa- - trolmen illus- - thing.. And, some of them added, women frequently are . among the offenders. "I've had women cry when 1 gave them a ticket," a Boston po-liceman said. "A lot of them try to talk me out of it by saying their husbands will be furious. Occasionally one will become ' furious at jne, too, insisting that, she has done nothing wrong. "I think every driver should realize that we're just doing a job a job that the - taxpayers themselves pay us to do," he con-tinued. "Respect and courtesy on both sides can go a long way to-ward making things easier for everyone." A Seattle policeman told me he felt that this same courtesy could promote highway safety. "Many drivers get nervous or angry when stopped by an of-ficer," he said, "and that can keep them from driving safely until they settle down again. If both sides are courteous that can be prevented." It took a Lincoln Park, Mich., patrolman to show me that it isn't always serious business. The patrolman, Kenneth Rensi, pulled alongside a car and could see no driver. Turning on his siren, the car pulled mysteriously to the curb where Rensi discov-ered at the wheel ... a small 10-year-- old boy! trates the ex- - tremes of dan- - Misj Smith ger and tragedy which are a part of the daily life of every police officer. The two gunmen responsible for these slayings were first ap-prehended only as speeders! Reflecting on this, I asked policemen, sheriff's deputies and state troopers in many sec-tions of the country about their experiences in stopping traffic violators and never knowing what to expect. "Jijst people don't realize it," one Texas Ranger told me, "but we're ready for anything when-ever we stop a speeder. "And the funny thing is, a lot of drivers wa pull over give us ' reason to think we might have trouble. They think nothing of insulting us, even though we're always polite but firm with them." Other officers throughout the country said much the same language the symptoms of all the most commonly encountered ail-ments of infancy and childhood, when to call the doctor, and what to do until the doctor comes. Dr. Austin Smith, distinguished editor of the Journal of the Ameri-can Medical Association, in a pre-face, says: "Dr. Henderson has written a book to help bring peace of mind to those who truly desire understanding of medical prob-lems. In fact, the first aid meas-ures in this book alone may be life saving." The changing patterns of the Help for 'Mom' When Baby's 111 Ignorance and feat go hand in hand, and fear can become terror in the heart of a young mother who looks into the crib of a sick child without knowing what to do. Fortunately, mothers no longer need to undergo this kind of pan-ic. A book just recently published, j"A Parents' Guide to Children's illlnesses," by Dr. John Hender-son, describes in simple, layman's health hazards in childhood are reflected in the emphasis which Dr. Henderson, an international authority and Johnson & John-son's Medical Director, places on what to do in case of accidents which today kill more children than all other causes combined. However, he doesn't neglect a careful description of the age-ol- d contagions, congenital defects, home nursing procedures in fact, every possible childhood ail-ment from diaper rash ' to polio and that the enlightened parent should do about it. The new guide is unique among such books in that it includes 27 illustrations in color of skin condi-tions which any mother should be able immediately to recognize, as well as more than one hundred line drawings graphically illustra-ting what to do when accident's strike or other health emergen-cies arise. Conveniently pocket - sized and easy to use, "A Parents' Guide to Children's Illnesses" was pub-lished by Bantam Books. A hard-cover edition will soon be avai-lable.
