Merrell, son of Reid and Robin Merrell, has been called to serve for two-years in the Rio de Janeiro North Brazil Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Latter-Day Saints. He will speak in the Jensen Second Ward Sacrament meeting on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 10:45 a.m. Elder Merrell will enter the Missionary Training Center Aug. 18. Grant Southam Elder Southam returns from serving mission Elder Grant Denton Southam, son of Lyle and Polly Anna Southam, returned Aug. 7 from serving a two-year two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Brazil Sao Paulo North Mission. Elder Southam will speak in the Vernal Sixth Ward Sacrament meeting, meet-ing, Sunday, Aug. 15 at 10:50 a.m. Historical Society George Long will be the speaker, Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., at the Uintah County Historical Society's meeting at the Golden Age Center. He will talk about his grandfather, William S. Powell. ; Powell moved to the Uintah Basin : in 1877 and became a pioneer teacher and bee keeper. His daughter, daugh-ter, Nellie Kloeppel, now 92 years old, lives on the original Powell homestead in Ashley Ward. She is I the only living child left from " Powell. ; The public is welcome to attend the meeting. David Green Green receives Mission call David S. Green, son of Danny and LaRue Green, has been called to serve two-years in the San Jose, Calif. Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will speak in the Maeser Stake Center Sunday, Aug. 15 at 9:30 p.m. Elder Green will enter the Missionary Training Center Aug. 18. Current Topics The Current Topics Club had a pot luck dinner at Remember the Maine park on Wednesday, Aug. 4 to honor hon-or past officers. Honored that evening were: Myrna Cobb, president; Lynda Anderson, vice president; Wilma Webb, secretarytreasurer; Isla King, reporter, and Marjorie Gagon, parliamentarian. The group also welcomed new officers: of-ficers: Colleen Martin, president; Sandy Morrow, vice president; Marge Sowards, secretarytreasurer, Teddie Evans, reporter, and Myrna Cobb, parliamentarian. uasey tmitn Elder Smith returns from Japan Mission Elder Casey Smith, son of Evan and Norma Smith, returned July 28 from serving two-years in the Japan Tokyo North Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will speak in the Maeser Fourth Ward Sacrament meeting Sunday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. EAGLE CANDIDATE Bryce Bartlett plants willows along stream bed. Eagle candidate helps riparian area in Book Cliffs TONY SPAFFORD and helper plants douglas firs on Moonshine Ridge Spafford completes Eagle project on Moonshine Ridge Eagle Scout candidate Bryce Bartlett chose a riparian project on BLM managed lands for his Eagle Scout service project. He, and those assisting him, planted over 2,000 willow trees in the upper Sweetwater Creek of the Book Cliffs. Hospital Auxiliary The annual summer picnic for the Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies and their partners was held in the backyard back-yard garden area at the home of Dode and Ralph Rolfe. Spafford, along with other scouts and adult leaders, planted over 1,000 douglas firs on the ridge. The purpose of the planting plant-ing was to reestablish the tree in an area previously burned by wildfire. Fortunately, the new plants will be able to utilize recent moisture in traumatic "getting their always started phase." Assisting Spafford with the project pro-ject were: his father, Wayne, brother Curtis, Jim Linschoten and his sons, Chris and Scott, T.C. Hemstreet, Marty Mortonson, Steven and Richard Buhler and John Kynaston. Tony is a member of Scout Troop 442 and David Weeks is his Scoutmaster. His parents are Wayne and Debbie Spafford of Vernal. The BLM project coordinator was Paul Buhler. Whitmire earns Arrow of Light Rhett Whitmire, son of Cliff and Pam Whitmire, received his Arrow of Light at Pack meeting last Thursday. He is a member of Troop 236 of the Davis First Ward under the leadership of his mother and Cheryl Keller. Rhett enjoys collecting basketball cards and playing basketball and baseball. He is a member of the High Uinta doggers' boys dance group and will enter the fifth grade when school begins.
