Show 7 20 Vernal Express Wednesday, August 11, 1993 Fall sports begin next week Believe it or not, the Uintah High School fall sports action begins next week Aug. 17-18 (Monday and Tuesday) with girl's soccer at American Fork and Springville. Cross country kicks off their season sea-son Aug. 21 with time trials at the Uintah Recreation Association 5K run beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the swimming pool. The golf team begins their season with tournament play in various Colo, locations over the next two weeks. Girl's volleyball will travel to Carbon Aug. 26 (the first day of school) to take on the Lady Dinos. Game times will be 3, 5 and 7 p.m. (varsity). Lynise Mott and Tiffany Bullock wait for returns. 10 and under f astpitch All Stars July 16, the Vernal 10 and Under Fastpitch All Star team traveled to Pleasant Grove to compete in the state tournament. There were 8 teams competing with the Vernal team drawing the first game of the tournament against the Pleasant Grove team Friday, July 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The team dropped a close, hard fought decision to fall into the consolation bracket and played again at 8:30 that night. The girls faced a team from Kearns and quickly became locked into a slugfest The game see-sawed back and forth before the Vernal team emerged with a 20-19 Victory. The team's third game began the next morning at 7 a.m. against a Sandy team in which the girl's slow start proved to be the difference as they dropped the game, ending their tournament play. Hannah Hansen and Heather Hacking handled the pitching duties for the team with Leslie Lucero catching. Jessica Magee played first, Celeste Sorenson second, Brooke Nelson third, Michelle Mansfield short, Kim Branch left, Tasha Bertola and Kaycee Romane center and Megan Haslem along with Nina Swett in right Jessica Magee homered twice, Brooke Nelson triple and doubled, Leslie Lucero doubled while Megan Haslem reached base at every at bat. Coaches Jeff Magee and Diane Hansen were pleased with the play of their team and the great support they received from family members of the players. ' Uintah County Recreation Summer Activities Uintah County Fair Tournament The Uintah Recreation Association will be sponsoring the Uintah County Softball Tournament Friday and Saturday, August 13-14, There will be "A" and B divisions for Men's and Women's teams with a 6 team minimum required to carry a division. Registration deadline Is Aug, 9 without a $15 late fee, Cost Is $75 per team. To register contact the Uintah Recreation OfficeCounty Building or call 781-5486. End of summer 5K race The Uintah Recreation Association will be sponsoring art 'End of Summer' 5K race on Saturday morning August 21 beginning at 8 a.m. The race will begin at Independence Park near the Indoor Swimming Pool. Cost for the race is $5 which will include a tee shirt or $3 without a tee shirt. Registration will be held on race day. For more Information call the Recreation Office at 781-5486. Men's "D" slow pitch softball tournament The Uintah Recreation Association will be sponsoring a Men's "D slowpitch softball tournament Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20-21. 20-21. Entry fee will be $100 per team. Registration deadline is Monday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. Registrations are currently being ac cepted at the Recreation Office at 152 E. 100 N, Vernal, 801-781-5486. Individual awards to first and second pface teams along with MVP award and tournament All Star team. 1993 Co-Ed softball league The 1993 Co-Ed softball league wilt begin Monday, Aug. 23. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m, There will be a coaches meeting on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at the County Commission Chambers. Entry fee is $125 per team or $15 per individual, Play will be on Monday and Tuesday in both "A" and 'B divisions. For further information call 781-5486. Uintah County Fair Horseshoe Tournament The Uintah Recreation Association will be sponsoring a Uintah County Fair Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Cotton Pavilion horseshoe throwing pits beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a singles and doubles division. Cost for the tournament is $3 per person per event Prizes will be given for top players, registration reg-istration wilt begin 8:30 a.m. the day of event or call 781-5486. Volleyball Clinic Uintah High School head volleyball coach Dorrls Salazar will be conducting a week long volleyball clinic for grades 9-12 beginning Monday Aug. 16. There will be two sessions with the first running from 8-10 a.m. and the second from 2-4 p.m. All athletes interested interest-ed in pfaying volleyball should attend. Basketball Camp Colorado Northwestern Community College coach Tom Heywood will be hosting a basketball camp for both boys and girls of all ages Aug. 12-14 in Rangely. The contest, which began at 8:30 a.m. and featured six teams was eventually won by Kevin Smuin and Richard Jackson. Second place went to Walt Ducey and Jim Harper while third place was taken by 14 year old Nedra Harper and Frank Annerl. Each winning team received re-ceived tee shirts for their results. ,.. Youth Flag Football The Uintah Recreation Association is now accepting registration regis-tration for their Youth Flag Football program. The program, designed for youth in the 3rd through 8th grade is structured to teach the basic fundamentals funda-mentals of football while providing recreational league play. Players are placed on age group teams and games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the CityCounty Park and are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Sept 14. Cost for the program is $20 per child and $15 for any additional children in the same family.
