A1 Merle Allen Martha Jane Miller Miller dies in Roosevelt Martha Jane Miller, 74, died in Roosevelt on August 4, 1993 due to congestive heart failure. Miller was born on March 18, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Helen Nordquist and Herbert Curtis Legg. She married George Miller Sr. in 1944. She spent most of her life in California and was active in civic groups in the Los Angeles area. She was responsible for several parks being established in L.A. County and was an active supporter of "Estra Lida", an Alcoholics Anonymous support group in Pasadena, Calif. She was employed by California Savings and Loan as a wire transfer operator from which she retired in 1978 to Palm Desert, Calif. Miller is survived by two children, chil-dren, Marcia Jean Goodman of Vernal and George T. W. Miller Jr. of Roosevelt as well as four grandchildren. grand-children. Graveside services are being conducted con-ducted by Hullinger-Olpin Mortuary and the family, in Roosevelt at 11:00 a.m. on August 10, 1993. Memorial services held for McRae Saturday, August 7 services were held for Robert Morris McRae, who died on August 3, 1993. Michael McRae conducted the services. The opening prayer was offered by the Honorable Charles Hardy followed by the eulogy, given by Harry Souvall. There was a musical selection, "If I Loved You" performed per-formed by Annette Hatch. The Honorable A. Lynn Payne then spoke and was followed by a second speaker, Lonnie DeLand. Annette Hatch then sang "Amazing Grace" and was followed by a talk by Michael McRae. The closing prayer was offered by Rial Chew. News from Tridell by Lorna McKee 247-2350 Tridell celebrates Pioneer Day The Pioneer Day, July 24, celebration cele-bration was held on Saturday at the ; community hall in Tridell. A parade pa-rade kicked-off ,the events and was "followed by a pioneer program. Children's games and races were held as well as adult activities. A pot luck dinner with barbecue pork and beef was served. : Ronald Bob Goodrich, 55, died July 21 at AVMC of a heart attack. Funeral services were held July 23 in the Tridell Chapel with interment inter-ment in the Tridell cemetery. His wife, Sandra, died in June, also of a heart attack. . Clark McKee was attacked by a bull. The Bishopric and Frank and Sheril Thomson. McKeachnie family and Bonney family Viola Burns Burns dies at 87 Viola Louisa Cloward Burns, 87, died at Ashley Valley Medical Center on August 4, 1993. She was born March 4, 1906 in Moroni to Albert Oliver and Almire Jane Bradey Cloward. She married Burnice John Burns June 18, 1924 in Vernal. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Nov. 11,1978. Burns was a homemaker and a member of Davis Fourth Ward. She served as Sunday school teacher for twenty years, was a primary teacher, teach-er, relief society visiting teacher, homemaking leader, and also taught in the nursery. She enjoyed raising flowers, camping, cooking, sewing and quilting crocheted rag rugs. She was preceded in death by a son, Clell Reid Burns, 3 grandchild dren, 1 great-grandchild and 2 brothers. She is survived by her husband, children; Clyde and Sherry Burns of Vernal, Jack B. and Lorene Burns of Murray, Mrs. Merrill (Clara B.) Miller, of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Arthur (Nelda) Hardinger of Salmon, Idaho, Mrs. Lynn (Melba) Slaugh of Vernal, Mrs. Kay (Dorothy) Mecham of West Jordan; 31 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren, two sisters; Blanche Rudy of Logan and Marjorie Akeland of Vernal. Services were held August 6, 1993 at Davis Fourth Ward Chapel with Bishop Rick Zufelt conducting. conduct-ing. The family prayer was given by Lynn Slaugh and prelude and postlude music was played by JoDean Slaugh. There was a musical, musi-cal, "I am a Child of God" performed per-formed by the great grandchildren and accompanied by JoDean Slaugh. Bishop John H. Bums offered of-fered the invocation and was followed fol-lowed by Bishop Rick Zufelt with remarks. Neldon Slaugh spoke and was followed fol-lowed by a musical "Rocking Alone in an Old Rocking Chair" by Daun DeJournette and accompanied by Tex Ross. Bishop Keith Miller then spoke and was followed by a musical musi-cal selection, "In the Garden" by Kay Hunting and Mary Ann Snow and accompanied by Dawn DeJournette. Clyde Hardinger offered of-fered the benediction. Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons, Lee Burns, Jeff Goulden, Allen Hardinger, David Slaugh, Leland Mecham and Bryan Miller. Interment was in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Thomson's Venial Mortuary. Dedication of the grave was by Clyde Burns with compassionate services provided by the Davis Fourth Ward Relief Society. Guatemala. Eileen and Lane Davis and family fami-ly of Garden Grove, Calif, returned home Friday after spending a week at the DeVon McKee home. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hall, Salt Lake City, have also been visitors. All the DeVon McKee family were together to-gether and held a family reunion last week. The David Wallace family took their son, Elder Jarod Wallace to the Missionary Training Center July 21, prior to going on his mission mis-sion to San Jose, Calif. " Kristen and Cache Miller x have moved to Midvale. 1 Allen dies in Whiterocks Merle Ray Allen, 78, died August 6, 1993 at his Whiterocks home. He was bom June 28, 1915 in Vernal to Archie F. and Hazel Johnson Allen. He married Wilma Cox in Orlando, Fla. on May 15, 1944. Allen worked as a farmer, truck driver, sawmill owner, mechanic and carpenter. He was in the Army during World War II and was-a member of the LDS Church. He enjoyed en-joyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and farming. He is preceded in death by his wife, who died on July 31, 1993. He is survived by his children; Daniel Marion Allen of Afton, Wyo., Mrs Leroy (Greta) Ownbey of Salt Lake City, Raymond M. Allen of Whiterocks, Carol Ray Allen of Portland, Ore. and Michael L. Allen of San Angelo, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; grandchil-dren; brother and sisters; Neva Hemstreet Bingham of Vernal, Norma Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz., Floyd Allen of Vernal, Andre Williamson of Vernal and Naomi Hardison of Chico, Calif. Memorial services were held August 9 at Thomson's Vernal Mortuary with LeRoy Ownbey conducting. con-ducting. The invocation was offered by Don Simmons followed by a poem by Sandy Allen. Golden Age News Seniors plan picnic in mountains by Ada Murray Senior citizens from the Golden Age Center will board vans at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12 for a picnic pic-nic to Aspen Grove. Drivers want to leave on time and those attending are encouraged to be at the Center by 9 a.m. A Social Security representative will be at the National Guard Armory on Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Also there will be someone at the Center the same day to take blood pressures. pres-sures. Federal commodities will be given out to senior citizens on Friday, Aug. 20. Doris Bodily was the first place winner at bingo on Tuesday, Aug. 3, winning five games. Clarification To clarify an article that appeared in last week's Vernal Express, the new Miss Uintah County, Jennifer Kerns, moved to this area in May, 1992. She will complete her community com-munity service project in Uintah County and travel back and forth between Vernal and Provo to provide pro-vide the community service. UHS Flag tteam receives honors at USA Flag Camp The Uintah High School Flag team traveled to Boulder, Colo, on July 26 to participate in the USA Flag Camp. During the four day camp, the team was judged in three areas: showmanship, choreography and execution. They received superior supe-rior ratings in each category as well as a superior plaque and the USA Spirit stick.
