Show PIONE PIONEER RECALLS TREK OVER PLAINS TO UTAH I Aged Resident of Sugarhouse Tells of Ox Team Trip TripI West Weste It I Into Wild As he sits gazing out the window at the string of fast moving ears cars speeding along the smooth ribbon of concrete that pisses his home ot at 1302 East South street his mind flashes back to the fifteenth day of September 1866 when he trudged ed b the ox team that brought him and his father through Parleys Parley's canS can yon on and down the same street when it was nothing but Q a dusty wagon trail and gave them their first glimpse of oC the Great Lake 0 volley II ey Job Hemsle now nearing his eighty eIghth birthday was a young lad of 19 10 years when he passed through the brush cov red des crt ert that was later to become his home and the site of a thriving business district surrounded by many ful homes Mr Hemsley was born Januar January 6 1847 in England Engl-2nd the son of Mr and Mrs Richard Hemsley Hemsle converts of the L. L D D. S. S church His mother died when he was but a 0 child and on May 6 6 1866 he sailed from the shores shore of his homeland accompanied by his lather father and stepmother along with L. L D. D S. S converts bound for the state of and its fertile valle valleys s After Afler 35 days das of ocean voyage the or- or rived on June 11 nt at the docks in New NewYork NewYork York City and set foot upon soil of 01 their their adopted coun country tr Warned of Ralden Gorilla raiders were prevalent pre throughout the eastern states and the party were warned against attempting t to cross those ot at that time so the party pary journeyed to Montreal Canada along the border to lo Huron where they crossed the Great Lakes and again entered the borders of the States State While traveling travel travel- ing through the state of Michigan the party os involved in a train ace ace- dent which several coaches but fortunately no one was injured From St. St Joseph Mo to Wyoming City Nebraska travel was by steamboat steam steam- boat and it was at the tatter Jatter cit city the emigrants were outfitted wIth ox teams and provisIons with which to moke the long drear dreary trek across the plains leaving behind the boundaries of the village on July 11 I After a few days das of travel Mr Hemsley's stepmother became seriously se- se ill end died July 26 6 A guard was appointed to watch over the remains remains re- re mains throughout the night to ward off oll wild animals and with the corn com jag ing of the morn B a grave was dug beside beside be- be side the trail end and the worshippers knelt in farewell prayer for the pIoneer plo plo- neer woman who had her Jl toward the future of the west Indians on Alert I bands were scattered over the thc plains ever on the alert to make raids upon the W trains end and from this hazard the weary travelers were prone to struggle along wIth much anxiety and little rest One evening the still air was rent with Indian yells as the red men made a hurried mid aid on the camp driving off head of the trains train's oxen without loss los or injury to of this pioneer pio pio- neer camp Brigham Young hearing r rI M g 4 v- v T Job H Hemsley of oC the loss to the party from messengers messen messen- gers sent ox teams and again the party moved tow toward ud the setting sun and the valley of promised rest resL Within sight of the oasis in the val val- Icy ley the father of Mr Hemsley became Ill and within a few days das after the arrival of the party he too mode made the journey journe across the great greal divIde The lad who had suffered the loss of his parents was soon greeted b by his brothers Richard Jr and ana Edward Hemsley Hemsle and his sister ister Ellen the three having made the journey pre pre- Richard coming the handcart brigade and Edward and Ellen also making the trip by ox teams After Arter a few dos days rest In Salt Lake L. Mr Hemsley drove his ox team ck along the thc trail settling on a site now located on South Twelfth East street and a few years cars later began clearing ring brush and leveling the ground where his present home stands Build Brick Plant He with his brothers erected the first brick plant in the southeast see sec tion and bricks were manufactured for many of the old pioneer homes and school buildings Mr Hemsley also helped grade many miles of roadbed road road- bed for the Union Unon Pacific railway when that company was building the first continental railroad and later spent several years in the mercantile business in Sugarhouse Since his or or- rival in the Sugarhouse district in September 1866 the district has been his home and he hc shares shares- honors with Richard as being the two t old old- eta residents of the district One of his prize trophies of the post past is an old muzzle loader rifle issued him when he s a member of Brigham Brig Brig- ham Youngs Young's militia He has two daughters living in Salt Lake one who is keeping house for him in his declining years a son II livIng liv- liv ing in Los Angeles Ca Cal 15 grandchildren dren and 26 great grandchildren one and it is is- isone one of his greatest joys jos to have members of oC his family gather around while he relates tales of the pioneer da days s |
