Show Utah County Grew 8 Percent of State's Snap Beans Utah county grew approximately 8 per cent of the snap beans raised in Utah in 1951 for sale to canners, according to American Can Company. Com-pany. The estimate was based on Utah State Agricultural College Extension Exten-sion Service figures showing that the county produced about 332,000 pounds of snap beans last year on 100 acres. Farmers throughout the state in 1951 produced about 4,200,000 pounds of snap beans for canning. Dr. H. E. Michl, economist for the can-making firm which maintains the largest research laboratories in the food container industry, explained ex-plained that development of improved im-proved containers and canning methods largely has been responsible respon-sible for opening markets for Utah vegetables thousands of miles to the east. "The $17,600 that Utah county farmers received for snap beans sold to canners benefited very-body very-body in the community, from farm workers to the corner grocer, through the normal turn-over of money within a locality," Dr. Michl explained. |
