Show DR. HERBERT MAW TO RUN FOR STATE GOVERNOR Dr. Herbert B. Maw, member of the state senate for ten years, and its president for four years, prominent Utah educator and former for-mer dean of men at the University Univer-sity of Utah, announced his candidacy can-didacy for the nomination for governor on the Democratic ticket1 it a public mass meeting which attracted supporters from all parts of the state to the Newhouse hotel ho-tel in Salt Lake City Wednesday evening. Prominent for years in the affairs af-fairs of the Democratic party, Dr. Maw outlined a comprehensive platform on which he will seek election to the state's highest office. of-fice. The theme of his platform was given in his final remarks: "I believe be-lieve that the day has come when our state government should tackle the problem of working for the welfare of its common people by creating opportunities for all of its residents to improve their living conditions." Dr. Maw was born of Utah pio-ners pio-ners on March 11,- 1893, in Og-den, Og-den, and was educated in the pub-! lie schools of Ogden and Salt Lake City and the L. D. S. high school. He received his L. L. B. degree! from the University of Utah; B.S. I from the University of Utah; M.A. I from Northwestern university, where he also received his Doctor I of Jurisdiction degree. HERBERT MAW Army in 1917 and went overseas with the 89th division, where he served in the St. Mihiel and Ar-gonne Ar-gonne sectors and also in. the army of occupation in Germany. He taught school in the L. D. S. high school, and is professor of speech at the University of Utah. I He was a member of the general board of the Y. M. M. I. A. from 1928 to 1935, and since then has been a member of the Deseret Sunday School union general board. j From 1929 to 1938 he was a member of the Utah state senate, sen-ate, serving as its president from 1935 to 1938, inclusive. He was married in 1922 to Florence Beuhler, and they have had five children, four of whom are living. |
