Show According to Mr. Alexander Buchan, thunder has been heard in Iceland in only twenty-three hours during the last fourteen years. Prof. Tait of Eidnburg [Edinburgh], estimates that the energy developed in the form of heat by a fall of only one-tenth of an inch of rain over the whole of great Britain is equivalent to the work of a million millions of horses for half an hour. Investigations by A. Muller show that the fresh loaves of sugar-beet contain four per cent of oxalic acid, one-third in a soluble form. When it is considered how great are the quantities of these leaves eaten by cattle where the beet sugar is made, farmers should be on their guard, as the acid induces inflammation of the stomach. An observatory, with fourteen telescopes, is opened in Paris for the free use of the public. It has a room for microscopical observations during the daytime. A cloth for polishing metal is manufactored [manufactured] in France under the name of servietts [serviettes] magique [magic]. It consists of small pieces of woolen cloth saturated with sap and tripoli colored with sachsion. Medical investigation shows that some of the occupations for children at kinder-garten schools are injurious to the sight Among theses are the pricking of holes over a tracing on paper, braiding bright colored bands of paper, and sewing fine silk upon tracings. Edison now thinks he has struck it. He is putting up hundreds of electric-lamp posts all over Menlo Park, and means to test his light on a gigantic scale. His company has mapped out New York city into circuits, and the introduction of the Edison light will be rapidly carried forward as soon as his experimental lights are in sure operation. He now uses a bamboo fibre [fiber] for his incandescent arc, which will last 8 months, when a new lamp will take the place of the used-up one at a cost of 37 cts [cents]. The present form of his lamp is more awkard [awkward] than the former, it being 8 inches long by 3 in diameter at its bulging middle. The light will not appreciably cheaper than gas. will not bo be appreciably cheaper than gas |
