Show THE As cont. from page one water system update which will improve the system. A new 100,000 gallon reservoid is about 60 percent completed. Distribution lines still remain to be installed. Earl Petersen, Elwood, said a $10,000 allocation from the state drought emergency fund has been used to dig a new well. The well has been dug, but city officials are deciding now with the help of a geologist whether to go deeper. The well digger struck water at 97 feet and has dug to a depth of 130 feet. No tests have been done to determine how much water the well will produce but Petersen said it is more than can be bail measured. "It's cold and it's sweet," he added. "We definitely will have water in the line as soon as we can get power up there." Petersen said the community sys- tem is getting about 60 gallons a minute-2- 4 gallons a minute from a well and 36 gallons a minute from its half of a source in Cold Water canyon. Deweyville also receives some water from the system. That 36 gallons a minute from Cold Water canyon amounts to about as much as the spring normally yields during the low month of the year in February or only about 20 percent of normal flow. The community's 200,000 gallon reservoir hasn't been full since the valley got a week of rain back in May, Petersen indicated. Water is "iust ' running thru the reservoir into the distribution system. Monday workers dug out a source in the canyon and got another nine gallons a minute of water into the system. But Petersen thinks that is just a temporary measure which will "cut back." far as restrictions, Water use is allowed for cullinary purposes, livestock but no lawns. It can be used sparingly for gardens. While not predicting a water rate increase, Petersen mused that Elwood like many other communities which have had to add wells to their systems to supplement natural springs will find that pumping water makes it more expensive. In Tremonton there still seems to be plenty of water but odd and even watering restrictions have been maintained to keep pressure up. City Manager Jay Hirschi reported recently that there is more water running in the Bear River than is supplying Tremonton. The problem this summer, as in past summers, is that the city lacks storage reservoir space and adequate distribution lines. A bond issue is contemplated this fall to see if residents will approve a part of the money needed for a $1 million plus water system update project. In Plymouth, another community which has a water system improvement project underway, a more restrictive outside watering system was implemented about a week ago according to Greg Lamb, a city councilman. Under the new system, home owners can water on three days of the week between 9 a.m. and p.m. There is no watering on Wednesdays. Under the old system, home owners watered on odd or even numbered days and could water at any time except between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Since going to the new system, Lamb said water has been available to homes where it was running low or out every night under the old system. 5-- II STEAMER BASKET Ate REG'3.75 SALE We have different models to choose . . Dm July 13thrthe Utah Department of Transportation's special Ad Hoc Sidewalk Committee endorsed UDOT recommendations on the use of the $1.5 million in Safe Sidewalk Funds appropriated by the Legislature last March. In Box Elder County a sidewalk will be installed in Garland on the east side of Tremonton Road (U-8(past the high school) from 237 South to 1400 South. And in Perry, curb, gutter and sidewalk will be installed on the east side of US-8- 9 from 2400 South to 2835 South. General guidelines for distributing the funds were developed using a formula which included the number of pedestrian accidents, the general population and the number of school children in each county. In an effort to make the funds go as far as possible, local governmental units were encouraged to participate in the projects through financial contribution, donation of labor and matery ial or donation of by property owners. The Bear River Health Department would like to remind parents of kindergarten and first grade age children of the importance of having adequate immunizations. Immunizations have made most of the serious childhood diseases a thing of the past. In the case of measles, mumps, and polio, the number of children harmed for life by complications from these diseases has decreased draUnfortunately matically. when we only hear of the childhood illnesses infrequently, we forget the need to be adequately immunized. Several surveys have shown the immunization levels of two year olds to be well below the recommended level. By the time a child enters kindergarten or first grade he should have had the basic three DPT & Polio immunizations with a booster at 18 months and one additional booster between age 4 and 6. Mumps, measles, and rubella vaccine can be given at age 15 months and will provide a lifetime protection against those diseases.
