Sal-aries Increased The board of education met for the first time i a month last evening Mayor Scott presided and Messrs Pike Colbath Newman Armstrong Young Johnson Snow and kelson were in attendance WANT THEIR PAY Miss Ida Fry a teacher employed in the east side high school asked that she be paid the sum of C 35 due her Referred to the committee on teachers L G Worstoll also employed in the east side school stated that his voucher did not cover the amount duo him for services ren dered Committee on teachers SHE IS WORTH MORE Superintendent Millspaugh recommended that the salary of Mrs McKay a teacher employed by the board be increased to 875 per month as her services were worth that amount Committee on teachers A VERY GRAVE CHARGE Superintendent Millspaugh reported hat on several occasions he ha hoard that Prof Edwards teacher of music in the public schools bud appeared before his classes when it was apparent that he I had been drinking On Wednesday the I professor appeared before bis classes in an intoxicated condition and he therefore suspended pended him at once The superintendent superntenrent was sustained and the matter was reported to the committee on teachers CLAIM FOR DAMAGE Hanlon Benson the contractor rep resented that they were awarded the con tract for the Fifteenth district school house and had given bonds in the sum of 72000 and had waited for the board to se bet a site in the meantimo declining to bid on other buildings As no action had been taken they had suffered serious loss and they claimed that they were entitled I to 750 being about onehalf of the profits on the contract had they carried i out Referred to the committee on buildings FROM THE TREASURER Treasurer Walken submitted a statement state-ment of the receipts and disbursements of ho board from July 30th to November 1st The receipts were 2323717 and the dis bursements the sum THE FOURTEENTH DISTRICT The committee on buildings reported that the work on the Fourteenth district school building was progressing very slowly and there seemed to bo but little effort ef-fort on the part of the contractors to hurry it i Two months extension of time had been > given without imposing the penalty In view of tho facts the committeo recommended recom-mended that the penalty be enforced until unti the building was entirely completed and accepted ac-cepted by the board The recommendation vas adopted unanimously and the clerk was instructed to notify the contractors of he action taken TEACHERS SALARIES The clerk reported that the salaries of teachers and other expenses of the board had been paid as ordered and it was de ciaed to pay salaries etc in the same manner man-ner until further orders MORE ROOM SECURED The committee on buildings reported that he west wing of the Eleventh ward meet l ng house had been secured for school purposes pur-poses for 30 per month TO FACILITATE MATTERS Superintendent Millspaugh suggested that electric bells be placed in all the large sohool buildings to facilitate the passing of classes etc Referred to the committee on school work MORE SCHOOL FURNITURE The committee on furniture reported that a car of furniture for the Fourteenth district school had been ordered from the Grand Rapids Furniture company and that the car load of desks ordered from W H Andrews company had arrived TO FURNISH COAL The committee on supplies reported that a contract had been made with A L Wil lams to furnish coal for them Wi INCREASING SALARIES The committee also recommended that Adopted the salaries of several anitors bo increased EXAMINATION OF TEACHERS Superintendent Millspaugh suggested that some date be fixed fur the examination of teachers Referred to the committee on teachers MORE TEACHERS The committee on employment of teachers teach-ers recommended that the following teachers teach-ers employed by the superintendent on temporary certificates be paid the amounts stated Ella Weir 570 per month Flora C Blackburn 70 h h Nellie Colonel Nelson stated that the board had leased the south wing of the exposition expositon building for school purposes on condition that the board put in tho necessary partitions parti-tions The action was ratified A DELL AND A FLAGSTAFF The committee on furniture recommenaed the purchase of a flagstaff and bell for the I Fourteenth district schoolhouse that an L iron fence be put around the ground It was 1 decided to purchase the bell and flagstaff and the committee was instructed to get bids for fencing ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES The committee on school work reported a list of books and articles a lst needed in the t schools and recommended that they purchased pur-chased also that an assistant teacher of music be employed and that one addi tonal teacher be employed to fill vacancies which might occur on account of sickness I among the teachers The commit also I recommended that before the commencement commence-ment of the next term the east side high school be thoroughly advertised in the I local papers IN THE MIDST OF LAW SUITS Colonel Nelson of the committee on finance stated that the board was in the midst of a lot of law suits and the committee com-mittee was at present unable to male any report except that Collector Hardy had paid over to the board the sum of 30000 000 I special tax tx1nE FIFTEENTH DISTRICT Robert W Lewis asked for the use of ono of the recom-mended that the September accounts be closed and the October accounts opened S Colonel Nelspnmoved that the term of the officers date from their qualification instead in-stead of from July 1 After a long discussion discus-sion the motion wascarried Clerk Morton reported that bills against the board amounting in all to 13000 were in his hands and they were referred to the committee on
