| Show C03IMISSIONEK OF RAILROADS His Annual ReportIndebtedness of the Union Pacific to the Goveonment WASHINGTON Nov GThe report of tho commissioner of railroads contains full information in regard to the condition of several railroad companies coming under the jurisdiction of his office for the usc al year ended June 30 1890 As to improve e meats on all the roads the commissioner says I am able to report that many improvements im-provements recently have been and are continually being made These improve ments where they are made on the bonded railroads are specially valuable to the gov i ernment as they not only increase the earn ing capacity of tho roads but add largely to the value of property The amount received from bonded rail rai roads this year was slightly below the amount received for the preceding year Tnis the commissioner says is not owing I to a decrease in business but to the fact of i expenditures by the Union Pacific com pany in the purchase of new rolling stock rolng The commissioner adheres to the opinion it will be necessary to extend the time in which the railroads may meet their obliga tons to the government He suggests that in no event should the govern ment be a looser by granting grantng an ex tension The total net liability of the labity Union Pacific road to the eovernment on June 3 1S90 was 51717505 The gross earnings of the aided portions of the road amounted to 17199797 and expenses 512756509 leaving4733207 a net earn ing subject to the requirement of the law The amount found due the United States for the fiscal year 1SS9 was 1076139 The debt of the company on June 30 Ib90 was 178348039 and its capital stock capitl SOOSGSroa making 0 total liability of 5239716529 The assetts amounted to 24343141 The liability to labity the government of the Central Pacific road is given as i33367li5 gross earnings of the aided portion amount to 58971014 and expenses 7002491 aount leaving 133922 pet earnings subject to the require meats of the law The Souix City and Pacific railroad Pacifc companies liability to the government is i goverment given as 3611404 and that of tho Central I branch of the Union Pacific 338103 |
