| Show THE NEW YORK ViCTORY One of the most enjoyable and best features fea-tures of Tuesdays great victory is the capture cap-ture by the Democrats of the New York I legislature That great state is naturally Democratic and bas been so for many years The Democratic majorities range from 10000 to 190000 and Its state officials are almost uniformity Democrats But the legislatures are Republican year after year No matter how great a majority the party may have at the polls the laws are made by Republicans and the state continues con-tinues to be represented in the Senate by Republicans This condition of things was brought about a good many years ago by cue of the most shameless gerrymanders t ever perpetuated The legislative districts were so arrangea that no matter how many votes the Democrats cast it seemed impossible impos-sible for them to regain control of the legislature GKOVEU CLEVELAND for governor gov-ernor had nearly too hundred thousand i votes more than his opponent and yet his party was in the minority in both houses of the legislature Mr HIL I is serving his second term as governor and during all the years that he has been the executive the legislature has been strongly Republican and has done its utmost to handicap han-dicap and cripple his administration The United States Senators ever since the retirement re-tirement of FKAXCIS KCIIXAX have represented repre-sented the minority party the majority I i the Democrats having nobody to speak f for them in the upper house of Congress All this will now change Senator EVARTS retires with the death of this Congress Con-gress on March 4th next and will be succeeded suc-ceeded by a Democrat Senator HISCOCK will go out with the retirement of this administration ad-ministration March 1S93 and will of coursebe followed by a Democrat We say of course because we assume that the Democrats who have at last recovered their own after struggling these long years against such odds will see to it that the districts are reorganized after a plan that will be fair and equitable Indeed the Democrats would be justified in retaliating upon the party which has held the Empire state so many years against the will of the majority We mistake the character of the New York Democrats if they do not fix things in such a way that no Republican shall go from that state to the Senate within at least a generation Because of the unfairness of the districts in the state we say that the Democratic victory in New York is one of the most enjoyable en-joyable of the long list won on the 4th Hereafter its United States Senators will be representatives of the people of the state and notmerely of a minority faction The national Democracy will also secure its rights in the Senate There is another good thing about tho New York triumph Governor HILL it is assumed will be sent to the Senate and will thus be gotten out of the way of i I CLEVELAND being disposed of in such a i manner as to not antagonize him Nobody doubts the nomination of Mr Din D-in 1892 no matter what Governor HILLS ambition may be nor what the latter may do to secure the prize for himself at the risk of bringing defeat upon the party but it will be better to have the nomination come in such a manner as to insure the hearty support of HILL who is not only a cunning politician but a very influential one oneWe i i We regard the election in New York as definitely settling the matter of Mr CLEVELANDS nomination two years hence and settling it in a way to bring to him the i united and harmonfous support of the party |
