Show AUSTRIA-HUNGARY AND GERMANY. B A recent Vienna dispatch indicates that the fl Hungarians under Franz Kossuth are aiming to flj dissolve their alliance with Austria and take on B the sovereignty of an independent state. They B had better go slow. Austria has not the organiza- B tion to stop their intention, but Austria is Ger- fl man and there is north of Austria a German H Emperor who is building a large fleet of fighting fl ships and he covets the ports of the Adriatic ex- fl ceedingly for both his fighting and his merchant h ships. He has a dream that in his time the Gor- "H man flag will cover all the space between the fl north and Baltic seas and the Mediterranean jE wherever the German or any kinared tongue Is now spoken. If Austria in her distress should call upon him to extend his empire, he would not hesitate and that call is liable to come with tho death or abdication of Francis Joseph. Indeed, the German Emperor would not be liable to wait lbng for the call, but declare that the peace and security of Europe needed his interference. With tile armies df the German states consolidated, a power would be presented that would make all other powers hesitate before going to the assistance assist-ance of Hungary. The Austrian government has been but half a government for several years past. Its parliament has been much more like a rabble than a deliberate body, and there is demoralization demoraliza-tion throughout the realm, while United Germany lias been looking on and perfecting lier prepara-tions. prepara-tions. There will be swift work done there when the scepter drops from the aged hand of Francis Joseph. |
