Show Editor Goodwin's Weekly: fl One Alice announced herself in a recent num- fl ber of a current weekly as being averse to the fl way customers are served in a retail establish- fl ent of this city. I believe that the saleswomen Jfl are entitled to a defense, and I desire to say a fl few words through your valuab'e periodical. Miss fl Alice, in criticising us, forgets the manifold trials fl of a saleswoman. She forget the fact that the fl average woman like Alice strolls into the store, fl asks to be shown from twenty to thirty suits, fl tries them on without removing her gloves, and fl then saunters out of the store without even say- fl ing thanks to the tired saleswoman. It is exactly H that which makes a "wooden image," to use the 9 timeworn expression used by Miss Alice. The fl article was not only mean and unjust, but showed fl that the writer had no conception of or sympathy fl with the trials of a woman who spends eight or fl ten hours in trying to please customers who prob- fl ably did not intend to make a purchase and who fl do not appreciate the trials and hardships of a , fl saleswoman who is endeavoring to earn an honest fl livelihood by trying to please female pessimists H whose way in life is easier. 'jfl I do not desire to criticise Miss Alice; I merely fl desire to publicly sympathize with one with soul fl so sordid. A SALESWOMAN. I |
