Show Grand is Only SE Utah County With Increase Grand County is the only county in southeastern Utah County showing a property valuation increase in 1966 as compared with 1960. This is shown in the annual an-nual statistical study of assessed as-sessed valuations issued last week by the property tax division of the State Tax Commission. Grand's valuation last vear was $18.27 million as compared with, the 1960 valuation of $12.66 million. The Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. potash operation and new Denver & Rio Grande Western West-ern railroad spur were major maj-or factors in raising the mining public uitility assessments as-sessments from $5.54 million mil-lion in 1960 to $11.7 million last year. TGS promises to be a stabilizing sta-bilizing factor in Grand County's economy just as Kennecott Copper Corp. operations have been to Salt-Lake Salt-Lake County, Hill Air Force Base has been to Weber County, and U. S. Steel Corp. operation have been to Utah County. San Juan County, which ranked second -only to Salt Lake Coumtly in valuation in 1960 at $132.48 million has slumped to $56.88 million mil-lion and sixth place in total to-tal valuation among Utah counties in 1966. This has cut deeply into San Juan's finances and has affected state revenue. From levying 16 mills local school tax, ISan Juan in fiscal 1965-66 raised $398, 122 more than its basic sph'ool requirements and turned! this back to help pay for other schools in the state. Due to the drop in valuation valu-ation this year San Juan is expected to kick back no more than $90,000 toward state school costs. Carbon County had a 1960 valuation of $38.04 million which shrank to $34.37 million last year. Emery's valuation dropped from $10.5 million in 1960 to $10.7 million last year. |
