By Will McKay Student Reporter, Valley On May 3rd Valley Elementary students and faculty honored Jean Clark for her long years of work. She has been so kind and loving, that she has earned the name of “Grandma” Jean Clark. Everybody gathered in the multi-purpose room at Valley and presented many gifts and cards to her. She will be staying at Valley but everyone thinks that she deserved to be honored because of her long years of service. Riko Reese, a teacher at Valley has composed a poem just for her—it’s called “Grandma” Jean. “Grandma” Jean. She started 30 years ago when her own children were very small, Now she has helped so many more its hard to remember them all. From chapter one, being a cook, and watching the playground, To classroom aide, summer clean up, and walking the custodial rounds, Jean has done nearly everything that could be done here at Valley School. With a happy smile, encouraging word, and a hug as her main tool, Though not an actual teacher, her impact is much the same, Her caring and her friendship has earned “Grandma” as her name. We laugh as we call her by another named she’s earned, She’s called “Mean Jean,” only in fun, as many kids have learned, As well as all the students from the present and the past, We as a faculty hope that her enthusiasm will last. Many lives have been touched and tears have been wiped away. It’s for this loving care we chose to honor you today! “Grandama” Jean Clark From the Valley Elementary students and faculty Snowcrest Mock Trial Team Has Outstanding Season Each year, a group of students tryout for parts on the mock trial team. They receive a case from the state lawrelated education office and then prepare to be either witnesses or lawyers in trials which are held in courtrooms before judges and juries all over the State of Utah. This year’s case was one of the most challenging in recent history. It was a trial patterned after the Littleton, Colorado case where a parent of a murdered child is suing the parent of the child who committed the shooting in a school. The legal questions the case asks are: Should parents be held liable for the actions of their children? Can an expert really predict violent behavior potential in a troubled child? This year’s team was so outstanding that almost every judge they had thought they were a high school team. Their high scores placed them third in the sate in the playoffs. They lost their playoff game to a team from Logan that went on to be one of the top two teams in the state. Students meet before and after school and are assisted by two attorney coaches, Kent Snider and Jeffrey Burton. Attorney Robert Froerer critiques the final team presentation. These lawyers donate their time to teach students the basic rules of courtroom law—and drama! The 2000 Snowcrest Mock Trial Team consisted of student lawyers: Chris Burton, Becca Cox, Melyn Heckleman, Ransom Wydner and advisor Katey Heward; witnesses: Shantel Marsell, Elizabeth Stitt, Anne Shaw, Hailey Zenger, and Cassie Telleson; bailiff: Emily Guyon; backup team members: Chris Stitt and Jessica Snider; and teacher advisors: Sharon Holmstrom and Nancy Lowe. Eden Park’s First Annual Easter Egg Hunt a Success By Jeannie Wendell Ogden Valley News Staff The Eden Park Committee hosted a successful Bunny Hop and Easter Egg Hunt for the spring holiday. Lisa Barnes, with the aid of Princessa Fronk and Al Clifford, led the children in a series of songs and dances during the Bunny Hop. The children donned floppy bunny ears and fluffy bunny tails to participate in the production. After the Bunny Hop was over, the children waited eagerly in anticipation of the horn sounding for the Easter egg hunt to begin. Though a rainstorm threatened, the weather held out through the end of the activities. Parents and children alike enjoyed the day. About 500 children participated in the events at the new Eden Bowery, and over 4,000 prizes were collected by the children. Carol Guthrie said, “It could never have taken place if it weren’t for all of the generous donations.” The Eden Bowery staff wholeheartedly thanks everyone who helped and donated, contributing to the success of the event. “We are already looking forward to next year’s Easter Egg Hunt.” The following businesses and individuals generously donated: Ace Hardware Rod Anderson Aurora Bodyworks Carol’s Curtains Carpenters Woodworking & Design Charles Heward Diamond Peak Ski Shop, Inc.
