They will be guests of hon- Vernal youths earn national talent awards Three Vernal youths traveled to Las Vegas, Nev. to represent the state of Utah in the Young American Stars pageant grand na- tional finals. They competed against over 100 other state winners at the Excaliber Hotel. Christopher Lewis Lankford, 10-year 10-year old son of Tina Smithy, place first in the 9 tolO year age category. Christopher received a crown, cape, sash, septor and trophy and guaranteed guaran-teed representation for print ads and commercial work for the Wilson Agency of Los Angeles, Calif. He will also receive a $1,500 savings bond when he completes his reign by officiating at the State Young American Stars pageant next spring. Stella P. Salazar, 5-year old daughter of Tim Salazar, represented represent-ed Utah in the 5 to 6 year old age group. She placed as a finalist and received a finalist trophy. She is automatically au-tomatically eligible for competition in the state pageant in the spring. Stormy Jean Wood, 8-month old daughter of Kristina Wood, place first runner up in the one-year age group. She competed with children up to 23 months of age. She was awarded a trophy and ribbon and will also receive a $600 savings bond at the state pageant next spring. The one to four age group was judged on formal wear, sportswear and their photogenic appeal. The 5 to 18 year age group was judged on formal wear, sportswear, talent, photogenic appeal and judges interview. This age group also al-so performed a production number of songs from the sound track of "Aladdin" with Christopher performing per-forming a solo part in the production. produc-tion. Prior to leaving Vernal, Christopher's mother inquired at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce about taking a flag representing Dinosaurland to the national finals. She found out that there wasn't a flag available so the parents of the three "Stars'' made an orange and white flag with Dinah in the center. UHS teacher attends institute Kay Baker, a mathematics teacher at Uintah High School in Vernal, recently re-cently completed her second summer sum-mer in a three-year master's degree program at the University of New Hampshire. Baker is one of 90 mathematics teachers from across the United States participating in the Master of Science for Teachers (MST) Summer Institute. The 33-year old program-the oldest continuous program pro-gram of it's kind-is designed to enhance en-hance teachers' knowledge of mathematics math-ematics and their ability to convey it to their students. Eastern Star entertained by Colorado Star Steppers On July 17, Duveromy Chapter 17, Order of the Eastern Star, Vernal hosted a pot luck picnic at the Vernal Masonic Temple. At the invitation of the Worthy Matron Sandi W. Pratt and Worthy Patron James R. Pratt, the members, family and guests, the Worth Grand Matron Billie Toone, Worth Grand Patron Bruce Johnson and the Grand Officers of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Utah will be entertained by the 40 Colorado West Star Steppers ofUtah. The Colorado West Star Stepper was formed in 1980 and now has a membership of 60. The Star Steppers are a group who do drill-type drill-type marching. The drill team is composed of Eastern Star members representing 14 chapters , on the western slope. Their ages range from 40 to 80. Depending on where the practices are set up, some members travel long distances to participate in the group. The Star Steppers have performed per-formed in chapters all over the western slope.
