Gene Anfinson and his partner (and son) Tony, took the Uintah Recreation Association County Fair Horseshoe Tournament in the doubles dou-bles by defeating Chick Benyon and his partner Dean Reynolds in the championship game. Sheepdog championships to be held in Meeker The town of Meeker, Colo., and the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials will host the 1993 United States Border Collie Handlers Association National Championship Trial, . Sept. 9 through Sept. 12. The Nursery Trial will be Sept. 7 and 8. With a $10,000 purse for the Championship Finals and a $3,500 purse for the Nursery Finals, the event is expected to draw record crowds to watch over 70 dogs with over 40 handlers from across America and foreign countries. This year's prize purse is the largest of any previous North American Trial. The trial will be held just two miles west of Vernal's neighboring town of Meeker, located in the White River Valley in Northwest Colorado. Related activities of interest will be a craft fair and wool festival, lamb barbecue, authentic bagpipers, educational displays and demonstrations, demon-strations, an art exhibit and Calcutta. The Annerl duo lost to the Anfinsons in the semi finals and then dropped a close one to Benyon and Reynolds who then advanced into the championship game. In that series, the Anfinson's continued their hot throwing by winning in two games. In the singles tournament there were 12 individuals who competed for the title with some closely contested con-tested games involved. In the competition,' com-petition,' Bob Newbold won three straight games before succumbing to a younger Al Beck in the quarterfinals. quarter-finals. In the winners bracket, Gene Anfinson had to put down some tough competition including Al Beck in the round of eight and Walt Ducey from Dinosaur in the semi finals fi-nals before coming up against Frank Annerl in the finals. With one loss already to Anfinson, Annerl came back and beat Gene in a best two out of three! to force a playoff. The two again went best two out of three where Anfinson's experience came through with a third game victory for the championship.
