Show GEN. ADNA R. CHAFFEE. (Butte Miner ) With the death of Gen. Adna R Chaffee, there passed from this sphere of activity one of this nation's most gallant figures General Chaffee was possessed of wonderful personal force and ability The very fact that he rose to a high position in the regular army from the place of private proved him a man of remarkable force and energy, en-ergy, and was a vivid demonstration of the possibilities for men of such characteristics, no matter in what station of life they find themselves at the start General Chaffee was, Indeed, an almost heroic personality in the Spanish-American war, and yet he was a modest man in every way His personal bravery never was questioned ques-tioned During his career as a soldier sol-dier he was wounded three times. His soldiers had faith In him The entire en-tire nation trusted in his valor and determination And General Chaffee made good. He inspired his troops with the kind of confidence in him that Is so necessary in order to win battles In the days of the Spanish-American Spanish-American war and the Filipino campaign, cam-paign, General Chaffee's name often was in print and usually as the result re-sult of some important and gallant action. |
