Drug use left unchecked is a terminal disease it kills. It kills violently and unexpectedly by automobile accidents, overdose and suicide. There is no way to make the subject of adolescent suicide pleasant. plea-sant. Yet, is must be dealt with. The following was written by an unknown high school student and is entitled, en-titled, "A Reading in Unlove." Once on a yellow paper with green lines he wrote a poem And called it "CHOPS" because that was the name of his dog And that's what it was all about And his teacher gave him an A and a gold star And his mother hung it on the kitchen door and read it to all his aunts. And that was the year Father Tracy took all the kids to the zoo and let them sing on the bus. And that was the year that his baby sister was born with tiny fingernails and no hair. And his mother and father kissed a lot. And the girl around the corner sent him a Valentine filled with kisses. And his father always tucked him into bed at night and he was always there to do it. Once on white paper with green lines he wrote a poem and called it "Autumn" because that's what the name of the season was. And that's what it was all about. And his teacher gave him an A and told him to write more clearly. And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door because the door had just been painted. And the kids told him Father Tracy smoked cigars and put the butts on the pew. And the girl around the corner laughed when he went to see Santa Claus at Macey's. And the kids told him why his parents kissed a lot. And his father never tucked him into bed at night And he cried for him to do it. Once on paper torn from his notebook he wrote a poem And he called it "Question Mark Innocence" because that was the name of his girl And that's what it's all about And his professor gave him an A and a strange steady look And his mother never hung it up on the kitchen door because he never showed show-ed it to her And that was the year Father Tracy died and he forgot how the Apostles' Creed went And he caught his sister necking on the back porch And his father never kissed any more and never talked And the girl around the corner wore too much makeup and that made him cough when he kissed her but he kissed her anyway. And at 3 a.m. he tucked himself into bed his father snoring loudly. That's why on the back of a pack of matches he tried another poem And he called it "Absolutley Nothing" because that's what it was all about And he gave himself an A and a slash on each damp wrist And he hung it on the bathroom door because he couldn't reach the kitchen. , To the parent who thinks their teenager's drug use will go away, we say that it may just do that but it may also take the child with it. If your child is using drugs or alcohol, please get help. re DETECTIVE MANUEL CANTU shares information on home safety w.th youngsters at Sheriff's display during the I tome and Cardcn Show, MOWING SOME SIMPLE MATH AMI BRING YOU CLOSER TO COLLEGE. t.jp.nt New At ti yC'Mfce f "iitil. Field unit to answer vet benefit questions Local veterans and their families, who are concerned about the effects that cuts in Veterans Administration ( VA) benefits will have on their lives, can get straight answers, free of charge, when a national service office of the Disabled American Veterans' (DAV) visits Vernal. The DAV van will be parked at the State-County Building complex, 152 East 100 North Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The DAV veterans' benefits expert on this office-equipped van is fully qualified to assist veterans and their families in filing new and reopened claims for the full range of veterans' benefits and programs. There is no charge for these services, and veterans need not be DAV members to take advantage of them. Veterans in Vernal are not alone if they're worried about these cutbacks in VA benefits, according to DAV National Na-tional Service Director Arthur H. Wilson. Over the past couple of years, Wilson said, veterans have seen several news reports on changes in VA programs and services, cutbacks in VA health care eligibility, and proposals pro-posals to slash disability compensation payments. Also causing concern are changes in eligibility criteria for disability insurance programs of the Social Security Administration. "But what do all these changes mean to you?" asked Wilson in a letter let-ter to all disabled veterans in the Ver- nal area. "How do they affect your family? If you're worried about your rights, you should be. That's why the DAV is coming to your area soon. We're here to serve you." During that time, more than 430,000 veterans dependents and survivors have taken advantage of the free services offered by the highly trained DAV national service officers (NSOs) who staff these traveling travel-ing offices. In just the past year, 23,869 veterans and members of their families visited DAV field service units, up 28 percent over 1984 totals. "That increase is directly related to the threat veterans see challenging their earned rights as a result of federal budget-cutting measures." These veterans have questions about a broad range of benefit programs, including in-cluding disability compensation and pensions, VA educational programs, Social Security disability payments, military benefits, employment and training services for veterans and more. "These veterans and their families came to the DAV because they know we're on their side, totally committed to making sure they get aU the benefits their military services has earned," explained Wilson. "The DAV is not a government agency," the Vietnam veteran pointed out. "We're an association of one million disabled vets dedicated to helping help-ing our fellow veterans, and we serve no other master. That's why we've earned the trust of America's veterans and their families over the past 66 yejrs." The DAV asked that any veteran or family member who visits the field service unit when it is in Vernal to bring the veteran's VA claim number, If known, and Social Security number. These are needed for the purpose of filing fil-ing and reopening claims.
