W -.- 1,(1; Tf i I - J t t-rfj 1 By Aldon Rachele Express Sports Editor Rain wiped out the Uintah-Provo baseball game due to morning and afternoon storms, but landscaping work with sand and no more showers made the Roosevelt diamond playable and Union High School came away with a 3-2 win over Grantsville Grant-sville Friday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. inn-ing. Marc Crozier led off with a single and scored on a double by Tommy Olsen to give Union a 1-0 advantage. Andy Yergensen ripped out a single and knocked in Olsen with a 2-0 lead. Rodney Mezenen reached the base paths when his fly ball was dropped. Bobby Riding was walked and the bases were loaded up. Steve Gingell was walked and Yergensen crossed home plate with a three run Union lead. Grantsville scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to get back into in-to the game at 3-2. Danny Barney grounded out, but Paul Bracken was walked. Scott Harrison singled to put two runners on the base paths. Craig Matthews struck out, but the third strike was dropped by catcher, Ryan Eldredge. Matthews committed commit-ted the second out because first base was occupied and so the ball was fired to Union third baseman, Tommy Tom-my Olsen. Olsen thought the force was on and didn't tag the runner. The Cowboys took advantage of their new life when Marshall shocked the Cougars with a shot close to the fence for a double in left field, which drove in Bracken and Harrison and dropped Union's lead to one run, 3-2. Butler was walked, but Union pitcher, pit-cher, Mike Olsen blazed three pitches by Brian Sparks to get the Cougars out of the inning. Union went down in order in the bottom of the fourth inning as Mezenen grounded out, Donnie Brown popped up in the outfield and Riding struck out. Grantsville experienced the shutout blues in the top of the fifth inning in-ning and Union made some noise in the bottom of the fifth. Gingell bunted the ball and the toss to the first base bag hit the runner in the back. A sacrifice bunt by M. Olsen advanced Gingell to second base, but the next two runners, Eldredge and Crozier committed outs. David Millward was walked and stole second. Clint Christiansen struck out, but Barney crushed a high pitch for a double and knocked in Millward. Owen Curtis struck out on a bad pitch to end the inning. The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Cowboys. T. Olsen led off with a walk, but Wes Kroon struck out. Olsen took a running start and moved to third base on a double by Eidredge. M. Olsen hit a shot over an outfielder's head and T. Olsen scored to tie up the game at 1-1. Eldredge broke the tie when he scored on a perfect suicide squeeze play. Mezenen motored to first base on a bunt. Lynn Abplanalp struck out, but Crozier blasted a double with two outs to send Olsen and Mezenen home with a three run lead. Union scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-1 advantage. ad-vantage. Gingell grounded out, but T. Olsen was walked. Singles by Brown and Eldredge filled up the bases. The Union pitcher was Riding and he helped his own cause with a home run in the top of the sixth inning, which gave the Cougars an 8-1 lead and forced the scoreboard to emit a noisy celebration. Gingell singled, but Alan Bumgarner and Randall Nelson flied out. Grantsville's Millward was walked in the bottom of the sixth inning, but was forced out at second base for the second out. Barney grounded out to give the Cougars a doubleheader sweep over the Cowboys. The Uintah Utes will also have a home against Provo Wednesday at 4 p.m. Tennis meet begins May 20 The 2nd annual Rusty Racquet Tennis Tournament is set for May 20, 21 and 22 at the courts located north of Uintah High School. Cost of the tourney is $5. Vernal CityUintah County Recreation Department is sponsoring sponsor-ing the tournament, which is for players 15 years and older. There will be men, women and junior singles events and men, women, mixed doubles. Interested tennis players can register at the Vernal City Offices, which are located at 495 East Main. The phone number is 789-2255. All players must play at their scheduled times in order to keep from causing conflicts with other competitors.
