' J What to look for in good running shoes UTAH SENIOR rifle champion trophy is presented to Vernal's John Silcox, 16, right, by the National Rifle Association's Bob Davis of Washington, D.C. at the 1986 Utah Hunter Education Championship. May is both "National Physical Fitness and Sports Month" and "Foot Health Month." So isn't it a natural time to pick out some new running shoes? If you've done any running at all, you've probably noticed that shoes come in a lot of different designs (and prices), and you've probably noticed that running becomes drudgery when your feet, ankles, knees or leg muscles are in pain. There's a connection between those two revelations. The design and fit of your shoes can have a lot to do with your running pain, or lack of it. And the design needs to be customized to your own foot and stride, not chosen because it's been a great shoe for a friend. A lot more goes Into making shoes today than even a few years ago. Most importantly, shoe makers are paying a great deal of attention to biomechanics the motions and forces at work in particular parts of the body. Since a foot acts as a shock absorber for forces as great as three times a runner's body n$it, it is very vulnerable to strain - tivtally since many people don't run in the manner lx).t suited for the feel. Physical fitness doesn't have to be expensive, but it's certainly valuable enough that you should get the kind of equipment which will best help you keep it going on a regular basis. Keep in mind that no matter what aerobic activity you choose, you must schedule in at least 20 minutes three times a week for cardiovascular fitness. More frequent weekly schedules are necessary if you are also working at weight loss. If you are having problems pro-blems and pain becomes part of your exercise program, see your doctor. Pain is NOT gain, exercise should stimulate and rejuvenate you, not cause pain. Remember too, if you stop your exercise program for any longer than six weeks you will lose the benefits you worked so hard to achieve. For a lifetime of health and fitness, pick a shoe that is right for you and for the activity you have chosen, choose an aerobic exercise you enjoy and begin today. alms MIS j1 T ON ALL FORD RANGERS fl.gh new. ysu tal t"3 k S?v tin.irtc m$) oo tewti led '.i.
