This is an activity from the Scholastic Literacy Place Curriculum called "Home Towns". We are becoming aware of our own community. This year students took the Annual Town Walk to Mapleton's new Community Communi-ty Center. They were able to visit the Mayor, Police Department and Library, all in the same building! The ambulance crew accomadated by bringing their equipment into the building. What a beautiful facility and kind helpful Community Helpers! Thank you from the first grade teachers and students for helping us learn more about our community. We are proud of our new facility and those who work for Mapleton City. They learned a song, read books and had a special experiment day to taste, smell, touch, see and listen to things in their world. The favorite activity was what we call a "Texture Walk." Students are pictured as they walk barefoot bare-foot through boxes with items such as marbles, cotton balls, popcorn, marshmellows and "YUCK" cooked spaghetti! At the end of the walk is a nice bucket of soapy warm water and some towels to dry off with. Students definitely went home with nice clean feet and a memorable experience. Mrs. Watkin's class also had the experience.
