Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD, Section 2 Thursday, April 20, 2006 9 SHS art class is lots of fan for students Earthquake Preparedness Nicole Pigott SHS STAFF WRITER On Thursday Apr. 13, Springville High School held their annual Earthquake and Evacuation Drill. This was a mandatory drill that was held throughout the state. All schools in Utah were informed in-formed that they should conduct con-duct an accurate Earthquake and Evacuation Drill on that day. This allowed the district to make sure that all schools performed this drill and provided pro-vided accurate evacuation plans in case of an emer- SHS Spring Break next week Stephanie Mendoza SHS STAFF WRITER It is finally here, Spring Break! Students, faculty and staff at SHS have made it through a long year of school and everyone is looking look-ing forward to a few days off, and even though no one is sure what the weather will be like or how warm it will really be, many people already al-ready have plans. Mikey Helmer is going to ride her pony. She thinks it will be a lot of fun to have the time to do the things she wants to do and not to worry about homework. Breanne Ockey says, I am . going to hang out with Leslie Martinez and probably go to St. George." Andy Turner is "going camping down by Arizona." Not all SHS students and faculty will be playing or leaving town. Ruth Dittli is "going to visit her sister" and do yard work. Mr. Hylton, SHS physics teacher, says, "I am going to plant in our garden and look forward to tomatoes." Many dedicated SHS students stu-dents will not even get a break from class; Cassie Silversmith Sil-versmith says, "I am going to my college classes." Even though everyone is doing something different for Spring Break, everyone is excited. gency. "Experts who study earthquakes earth-quakes across the state have indicated that Utah experiences experi-ences a moderate (M5.5) earthquake about every ten years," said State Superintendent Superin-tendent Patti Harrington, in a letter sent to all school administrations ad-ministrations throughout the state; "The last earthquake of this size was in St. George in 1992." With these statistics, all schools should be earthquake safe and have appropriate evacuation plans in case of such an emergency. "The students' safety is our main concern," said Vice Principal of SHS, Mr. Brun-son, Brun-son, "We want to make sure that our evacuation plan is accurate and that all students are accounted for in the time of an emergency. That is why it is crucial for teachers to take roll after the evacuation evacua-tion so that we know if there is anyone still trapped inside that needs assistance." Although these drills may seem unnecessary, it is important im-portant that students realize the danger that could come from not knowing where to go and what to do in an emergency situation. Students Stu-dents have learned how to evacuate the buildings and what to do if stuff is falling from the sky (duck and cover). If ever an instance occurs, the students here at SHS will know what to do and where to go. Let's just hope that there is never a need for this knowledge. The art teacher, Mr. Lewis, makes art fun and enjoyable for all of his students. Students Stu-dents get an assignment at the beginning of every class and then they have the time that they need to finish whatever what-ever masterpiece they are creating. Mr. Lewis just has a fun air about him; he plays fun music mu-sic and walks around and assists as-sists the students. He is always al-ways happy and has a good attitude about everything. Mr. Lewis thinks that everyone's every-one's art is. good, and he doesn't criticize anyone. "Well, Mr. Lewis is a great art teacher, but pretty much my favorite part of art class is on Fridays when he serenades sere-nades us with Bob Dylan," says student Samantha Keele. You can tell just by hearing hear-ing the students talk about art that they enjoy it very much. Mr. Lewis will make you laugh and you will have a very enjoyable hour and a half.
