Show Health Specialist New Safety Officer Rob Lloyd, health education specialist for the Southwest Utah District Health department, has recently been appointed a consumer product safety officer. Lloyd will now serve the community in meeting the major objective of the U.S. consumer Product Safety Commisson which is to protect the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with consumer products. His duties will include recalling of materials that are unsafe and conducting investigations associated with product safety. In addition he will provide the community with education concerning unsafe products and accident prevention. Part of Lloyd's training, received from John Gries, a training i specialist, included 1 conducting an indepth investigaton of unsafe products. Many of the unsafe items are products commonly found in most homes such as bicycles, power lawn mowers, household chemicals, and toys. Each year it is estimated that 36 million Americans are injured and 30,000 are killed in accidents related to consumer products. The cost of these accidents is an estimated 9.5 billion dollars annually. I To reduce the number and severity of these accidents, Congress enacted the Consumer Product Safety Act in 1972. The Consumer Product Safety Commission was activated in 1973. Lloyd will serve to further the Consumer Product Act in Southwest Utah. |
