D Smith his year old neigh neigh- neighbor bor or and life imprisonment mended James Callis indicted jointly with him was freed It was the second time Harris had heard a jury accuse him of killing a i neighbor In 1919 he was released from the penitentiary by pardon after afler serving a few years of a year twenty sentence in another slaying Smith was abducted from his home last ast November and shot beside a country coun- coun try ry road A negro In whose death both oth Harris and Callis were indicted was killed In a similar manner that night Harris testified ho shot the white man because he believed he had lad criminally assaulted Mrs Harris and that Callis CalLs shot the negro apparently apparently without cause Callis denied the charge |
