Figures, precntai?es, and editorial edi-torial comment are taken from student's reports. It is also pointed point-ed out that in the sophomore class figures for male students only are Included). Has it ever occurred to you parents that your child is the type of child you don't want your child to go with? As a result of our studies as a physiology class, a group of informed in-formed students took pel rf the student body, and t jur.d that in one class the percentage which smoke and drink is nearly as high at 50. (Boys). Causes for such a high percent-age percent-age were varied, but one major reason is the ease one can obtain ob-tain tobaccco and alcohol. You, the selling public, and those of you which turn your backs on such a practice, seem to raise the stink when a drunk minor causes some damage. We feel that this is a community com-munity problem and requires the cooperation of everyone for the solving of it. By taking a fairly accurate survey we determined that there has been an increase in the number num-ber of students who have indulged indulg-ed in smoking and drinking during dur-ing the past year. The following figures will illustrate this: Out of 122 seniors 41 drink, and 15 of this 41 drink only occasionally. 59 do not drink. Out of 139 juniors 25.5 drink, 9.4 drink occasionally and 64 do not drink. Out of 91 sophomore boys, 34.1 do and 65.9 do not drink. Out of the 122 seniors 27.9 f .noke and $72.1 do not. Of the 139 juniors 34.6 do smoke and 65.4 do not. Out of the 91 sophomore boys 46.1 do smoke and 53.9 do not. After reading these figure the question may arise, "where do they obtain their tobacco and alcohol?" al-cohol?" Many minors state that these products are quite easily obtained in almost any service station, grocery store, or any establishment es-tablishment where cigarette machines ma-chines are located, or alcohol Is sold. People who allow minors to purchase such products are regarded re-garded as succors; they are not respected. Where is their reward? There may be a small cash profit, pro-fit, but what if the law should suddenly be enforced more strictly. strict-ly. Another question comes , to mind. Parents, your child is one of those mentioned above, but do you really know, or Just think you know, where he or she is, what he or she Is doing, and to what category he or she belongs? It no, we need your cooperation coopera-tion also In solving this problem. Let's be realistic. Most will agree that this Is wrong. Can't we do something about it? The cooperation of everyone parents, par-ents, town officials, merchants, minors, and the entire community communi-ty as a whole Is necessary to solve this growing menace. |
